I agree. As of right now he's being overrated but he is a work in progress and will be a real good fighter in a few years time.

He whupped up on Mosley pretty good. I think Canelo is being moved along at a good clip and he's on pace to have a dynamic career.

Every time I see him fight he looks better. Golden Boy will bring him along slowly and he's still growing so they're not going to rush him. Apparently he's going to be headlining a PPV card next time out. It'll be interesting to see who they put him in with. Probably Kirkland.

40 fights at 21 years old? That's not that slow. He's not exactly fighting pushovers either. He's not fighting elites, but he will have a big fight next year I would guess.

I don't see that they need to give him an elite level fight just yet. If he's struggling to make 154 then he might only have a couple more fights against guys like Kirkland at 154 and then move up, so they can give him another few B level guys and give him time to mature properly. He's going to be great to watch though.

Most boxers coming out of Mexico have to model their pro careers this way. The amatuer boxing programs in Mexico are basically non-existent and thats why the decent ones pop off 30-40 wins against scrubs before they start fighting some half way decent opponents. That being said, I don't think Canelo is overrated at all. You have to be careful to distinguish between how someone is RATING someone, and their EXCITEMENT about them. A ton of people are excited about Canelo. And why wouldnt we be? Everyone sick of the Floyd/Pac dance around. Now we can hopefully look forward to Alvarez/Chavez.

I agree with Lyle. It appears Alvarez is shaping up to be a real talent. He's not quite there yet, but he does some great things on offense.

He's coming along quite nicely, i don't think he's overrated. I think even during the post fight interview with Merchant and Mayweather, Larry mentions that Golden Boy has told him that Canelo is not ready for Floyd yet, which is true. They are taking their time with him and building him up so he can be the next Golden Boy PPV star. It's way too early to throw him in their with Floyd, Sergio Martinez etc.

I don't get this Canelo is overated stuff? Based on what?

I've never seen a 21 year old so relaxed and composed (Almost to a fault). He throws his shots with perfect technique and has superb speed and power.

What's the beef? All I can think of is that he doesn't fight the whole round.

He worked Mosley over better than both Floyd and Pac. Seemed like Mosley was up for it as well but just couldn't do a thing. (who does need to retire now)

He's obviously an elite fighter because he has absolutely destroyed all of the gate-keepers. Cotto vs Alvarez would be a great test.

Who's overrating him? Everything I read or hear has him pegged as a young and talented fighter with a big fanbase who could be a top-level fighter IF he proves himself in some big fights over the next few years.

    Sounds about right to me.

You can't really over rate a 21 year old with a 40+ fight undefeated record! That says it all.

Being 21 and beating any of the recent names on his CV is impressive. Regardless of who he is or where he is from.

To be honest, even if I heard of a 21 year old kid beating up Mosley or Hatton in sparring I'd be impressed.
