Julio Jr. vs. Andy Lee Saturday night fight/chat thread
I expect to see another shit decision, Lee would have to either knock Julio Jr down 6 times or knock him out to win this fight in El Paso, Texas. I'm not sure but HBO may show the Pac-Bradley replay before the main event. Vanes Martirosyan vs. Ryan Davis might be a good one if they show it as well.
June 16
At El Paso, Texas (HBO): Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Andy Lee, 12 rounds, for Chavez's WBC middleweight title; Vanes Martirosyan vs. Ryan Davis, 10 rounds, junior middleweights; Robert Marroquin vs. Arturo Santiago, 8 rounds, featherweights; Casey Ramos vs. Noe Lopez, 8 rounds, junior lightweights.
War Andy!

Re: Julio Jr. vs. Andy Lee next Saturday in Texas
Given the events last night, not even Lee KO'ing Junior will guarantee Lee gets the win. Don't underestimate the ineptitude/corruptability of boxing judges. And this is in Junior's backyard... under Papa's watchful eye. Not to mention the scumbag WBC president.
-
I'm not expecting Lee to win any decision, especially in Texas. Throw the outcome out the window and this should be a really good fight. I'm going into it expecting Jr to get the decision no matter what, but should be a good fight. Just turn it off after the final bell in the 12 round.
-
Re: Julio Jr. vs. Andy Lee next Saturday in Texas
I'm looking forward to this fight. My gut tells me it may be Chavez Jr.'s best performance yet.
-
Re: Julio Jr. vs. Andy Lee next Saturday in Texas
I like Lee, he is a good fighter, but as Mars has stated i dont hold out much
hope of Lee winning against the WBC golden bollocks. I can see another
shit decision again.:furious2:. Boxing now is becoming a joke with all the
terrible decisions recently.

Re: Julio Jr. vs. Andy Lee next Saturday in Texas
I actually don't mind Chavez, and feel he's getting better all the time. But, despite him beating Manfredo and Rubio comfortably, I take a fair bit from the Zbik fight. The amount of shots he shipped against Zbik, well. He better have a good chin, as an Andy Lee on form can really punch I reckon.
I've heard things regarding Lee in the Craig McEwan fight too so if they are to be believed, then he did very well to stick in there and stop McEwan. We'll see. I think It'll be a good fight, and i'm probably gonna just ignore any scoring and just roll with my own, disregarding what may or may not happen when the judges scores are read out.

Re: Julio Jr. vs. Andy Lee next Saturday in Texas
The clock is ticking. Same day weigh ins after June 30th.

Define "good fight" MMA. ;)
You mean like Andy Lee fighting his heart out but getting fucked on the judges scorecards?

I just hate watching a fight knowing that a guy like Lee hasn't got a snowball's chance in hell of winning a decision in Texas. I'll probably watch the fight anyway with the sound muted just in the hope that Andy lands a hay-maker and knocks Julio Jr. out cold.
-
This could be another horrible decision (it IS in Texas). Go Andy Lee! Knock his ass out!
-
Re: Julio Jr. vs. Andy Lee next Saturday in Texas
I can picture Chavez Jr being informed of his split decision win after regaining consciousness in the dressing room.

What? Just in Texas, or everywhere? I'd heard nothing about this.

I said good "fight" I never said anything about good "decision". Like I said just turn it off after the final bell because you already know Jr is getting the decision.

Re: Julio Jr. vs. Andy Lee next Saturday in Texas
Two predictions for this fight. Chavez wins and when HBO weigh the fighters before the bout he weighs 216 pounds.
-
Re: Julio Jr. vs. Andy Lee next Saturday in Texas
Lee can only win with a clear knockout, simple as that.
And i hope he does.

No the Wbc will implement it. It was announced by Jose this past January. So I fully expect Jr to drop the title after this fight. No way would he make 160 the day of a fight.

Re: Julio Jr. vs. Andy Lee next Saturday in Texas
This looks to be a very competitive match. I think Lee could take it, but Chavez is better than I thought. He certainly smoked Peter Manfredo when I thought Manfredo had a serious chance of winning.
-
Re: Julio Jr. vs. Andy Lee next Saturday in Texas
it's in texas, same place Whitaker vs Chavez happened...
Andy Lee isn't getting a decision even if he knocks out Chavez Jr.
-
Re: Julio Jr. vs. Andy Lee next Saturday in Texas
Try to see this on a positive note, maybe the scorecards will be tallied by the judge's seeing eye dogs. Mandatory eye tests for boxing judges starting in Texas. We might as well throw in a basic math test while we are at it.

Re: Julio Jr. vs. Andy Lee next Saturday in Texas
Is Lee still trained by Manny Steward?

Yes, of course, those two are inseperable.
Perhaps due to the horrible Pac-Bradley decision the judges for this fight will actually score what the fighters do in the ring. Hopefully Andy Lee brings his 'A'-game because he'll need a KO to win in Texas even if the judges are better than usual there.
I've got very extremely bad news guys......Referee Laurence Cole ....that's all Andy Lee needs to know, it's JC Jr, The Ref,3 judges, and the crowd against him.....come on Andy, go for the KO!!!

Re: Julio Jr. vs. Andy Lee next Saturday in Texas
Thanks.
I was looking at the odds, and seeing as Steward always encourages his fighters to get the KO, and everyone thinks Lee has no chance on the cards, maybe the stoppage (either way) is worth a punt.

Freddie Roach versus Manny Steward.
We can all agree that this is Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.'s biggest test so far in his career. If he beats Andy Lee decisively, with no real hiccups, and no issues with scoring, or failed/missing drug tests, he's developed into a legitimate middleweight champion/contender. If Andy Lee is victorious, he wins his first title and lands a fight with middleweight kingpin, Sergio Martinez. It's a big fight for both guys.

Well Andy Lee has only ever been beaten by stoppage and IF JC Jr actually punches as hard as people say he does then yeah a stoppage would be a solid call. As much as I would like to see Andy stop JC Jr I know full well if he starts slow like he did vs McEwan then more than likely JC will stop Andy. I just want to see how Junior's chin handles Lee's power, the uppercut could prove VERY effective vs JC Jr.
-
Re: Julio Jr. vs. Andy Lee next Saturday in Texas
FYI, I believe HBO might show the Pac-Bradley replay before the start of Jr. vs Lee. Considering the shitty decision Pacquiao got and all the criticism Texas gets, maybe the Judges will try to score this one fairly in El Paso. I sure fucking hope so.

Your thoughts were very similar to mine. I had a small bet on Lee to win by KO @ 9/1 because I believe he has the power to hurt Chavez. I also think Lee gets caught way to often so Chavez could just as likely stop him.
"Fight not going the distance" looks a value call.

You're not serious about Manfredo having a serious chance of winning.

He also thought Ricardo Mayorga was going to KO Miguel Cotto

I don't know who's going to win.......... but i guaran-dam-tee the judges in texas already do

You also think the Klitschkos are the greatest heavyweights of all time ;D
An to address the original question, yes I thought Manfredo could outbox Chavez Jr. Hell Matt Vanda beat him.

Wrong, I think the Klitschko's "are great", the greatest heavyweight of all time is hands down Joe Louis anyone who says Ali is greater than Louis is just caught up in the celebrity of Ali. Ali ran off at the mouth, Joe Louis never even had that chance, but he defended his title successfully 25 times in a row AND had years of his prime taken from his because HE ENLISTED DURING WORLD WAR II.
Well I'm sorry, but Manfredo is shit...I'm just disappointed I never saw the guy properly concussed and down for the full 10 count. I'm hoping Sergio Mora ends up losing a fight that way so I don't feel totally ripped off.

Fair post and not filled with any venom or condescension. Is this a new Lyle ? I like it. ;D
There is a very strong case for Joe Louis, he certainly was a very quality human being and unlike Ali he had true punching power.
I don't know why you hate Manfredo but its understandable seeing how he was on the first "Contender" and got plenty of undeserved shots at the big time.
The guy did draw with a shop worn, but not shot Jeff Lacy. That was something.
He also devastated Joey Spina when he was on a roll up til then, but otherwise he has been rather pedestrian.
Yeah I can't stand Sergio Mora. I was very happy when one of my favorite warriors, Brian Vera was able to beat him, by decision no less.
Also Vera is training at KRONK gym now, I think it will do him well.
-
Re: Julio Jr. vs. Andy Lee next Saturday in Texas
Manfredo, was a classic example of a fighter being ruined by his father's piss poor management. He had no business fighting Calzaghe when he did, and it ruined his confidence forever. He was an ok fighter that would have, most definitely, had more success with better management. I believe that Roach had just started working with him when the Calzaghe fight was made. Needless to say that Freddie quit immediately after learning about that mismatch.
Mike and Jerry Quarry's dad was probably the worst I've seen during my lifetime.

I don't much about Jerry Quarry's dad, but I'd like to know more about him and what he did towards his son's boxing career?

I hate Peter Manfredo because he couldn't beat Sergio Mora, and I HATE Sergio Mora. Also on 'The Contender' Manfredo was built up as this huge power punching dude who was the hands down favorite to win the show or whatever the hell and Alfonso Gomez beat him in his first match. I like Alfonso Gomez, he's a little dude that gives 100% and he's not scared to fight anyone. The fight vs Jeff Lacy was horrendous, Manfredo ran away once he got tagged 1 good time. Manfredo is an average fighter with a seemingly larger than average fanbase, he wears the flashy trunks, and has a mushed up grill and one would think he would follow in the Italian Warrior footsteps of Arturo Gatti, Vinnie Pazienza, Rocky Graziano, Jake LaMatta, Rocky Marciano, et al....but no, he's a poser. He's just not as blood & guts as 'The Contender' tried to make him out to be and as a fan I don't like being spoon fed bullshit. Manfredo can't be respected by me because he does fight scared and he doesn't push through it. Now people might complain about Wladimir Klitschko "fighting scared" but the deal with Wlad is he fights through fear and any other adversity and that's why he's a great champion and Peter Manfredo is a bum.
I hope to God Sergio Mora one day decides to fight a big time power puncher and he gets what is coming to him...which is a vicious KO loss! I don't hate Mora as a comentator actually, same with Tarver but in the ring, both of them irk me something fierce.

The :action: starts at 9:00 PM here in the States or 1:00 AM in the UK (for you night owls)
I figure if nothing else, Lee gives a really good account of himself in El Paso.

I get to miss the fight because I will be looking after my grandmother who recently fell. Someone please do a RBR so I can check in from my phone at least.
