I think he can definitely run the table at 135. Gamboa is the only true challenge there. 140 is where he might start running into some trouble, depending on how his power holds up there. He's definitely got more raw talent than anyone between 126 and 140 though. 147 is obviously a different ballgame, but the the big guys there will be long-gone by the time Broner's ready to move up that far (if ever). No comment on "157."
He's still super-young and has yet to face any elite competition though, so this could all go out the window. A fight against Gamboa would be the best way to judge things.
I'm looking forward to watching him again looks a class fighter, just dont like him when he opens his mouth.
Gamboa will clean his clock.;)
He can do a Pacquiao and win a middleweight belt fighting a welterweight at a catchweight - 157lbs
Word is he failed to make weight on the first attempt for his fight this weekend, coming in at 133.5. That's actually a far way off from 130. He's probably better suited to 135, as it is. Note that Broner is missing Uchiyama, the man at 130, if he goes up to 135 now. Uchiyama is a puncher too. Now, I understand Uchiyama isn't well known so I see the business reasons for not facing him. I'm just pointing it out so to see if he makes a habit of missing guys on his way up the weight class ladder. Also, Gamboa is the man at 126, by moving up, is Broner moving away from a fight with Gamboa? There's a decent amount of quality guys at 135 for him to face. Let's see where he goes from here.
Broner not making 130 is not surprising. In all honesty I was beginning to wonder how he managed it. He looks like a full on welter at fight time and fought much earlier in his career as high as 140 and hung out in the 135 area.
Gamboa has said that he is still moving to 135, regardless of the fight with Rios not having happened. So hopefully he and Broner meet there. I'm sorry we didn't get Donaire/Gamboa at a lower weight but Broner/Gamboa at a higher weight has the potential to be even better IMO.Quote:

Another pushed product interested more in being a loud mouth character than actually making weight and honoring a contract. We need less of this bullshit. People make way to big a deal out of the fight with Ponce. What was Broner even doing at 126? Does he have some kind of obsession with Armstrong? I'm not trying to make excuses for Broner but he overlooked him as a man that could not box his way out of a door way.

We often shit on fighters for not making weight and in many cases such as Guzman for example its justified but not in this case. How can anyone be surprised that Broner failed a 130 weigh in other then those who only see the class he fights in?
The majority of the boxing world considers these titles as meaningless trinkets. There has not been a true unified champ since Bernard Hopkins. Who cares if Broner is 133 for a 130 meaningless title fight? Go back to 8 divisions already.;D
Well people you guys are making great points I believe that the gamboa fight is being held off to give both a chance to succeed in moving up let them take different paths and if there still at the top make a super fight if I was a promoter that's what I would do. As for broner skipping fights it's been done time and time again in boxing pacmans done it mayweathers done it a lot of the greats have took the easy road rather than fighting a beast every fight at ther end of the daY u will always have to face who you've ducked!

Kirkland Laing here, steaming drunk at 9am. Too soon to say how good he really is and I don't see Golden Boy letting Gamboa anywhere near him. I think they'll keep protecting him for a long time yet. Hopefully he develops into a Mayweatheresque talent but there's a long, long way to go yet before he gets anywhere near that level. He is a talented fighter no question. But as others have mentioned, the competition he has faced has been a joke. HBO and company are clearly pushing for him to be the next big thing and they are padding his record accordingly. It's easy to make the comparisons to Floyd...he imitates his defensive style and brash personality. But Floyd was MUCH more polished at the same age...just a whole different pedigree IMO. And Floyd does the majority of his antics and crap talking to promote a fight. In the ring he is a professional. The whole "will you brush my hair" non sense was just plain corny and stupid. Lets see how this kid handles stiffer competition.
I really like him and don't understand all the references to him being a hype job. The dude is gifted and reminds me of the late George Benton. I just don't see a weakness in his game and believe he will be the next big star. People keep bringing up Gamboa. Gamboa has nothing over Broner including speed.

They decide who gets on the air, not the fighters or even promoters.
HBO will keep showing Broner because he has the, for want of a better word, personality to sell lots of PPVs in the future. They need somebody to replace Mayweather's PPV sales in the future and Broner is the most likely candidate, so they'll keep on showing him and hyping him up. Unfortunately that isn't going to help him get his feet back on the ground anytime soon.

But I disagree that there would have been a significant difference in the outcome. Broner obviously hit harder than Escobedo and likely hit harder than he would have if he'd come in lighter. But the big difference-maker was speed. And I don't think it was the extra weight that made him faster -- typically doesn't work that way. Sure, maybe he doesn't get the guy out of there that fast and then his stamina gives out because he had to cut weight too hard. But really, I think he's clearly a class or two above Escobedo talent-wise no matter what the weight.
Unfair advantage aside (which Escobedo did agree to, so I wouldn't call it cheating), Broner looked pretty phenomenal. I really want to see him fight Gamboa. The DeMarco fight he's talking about would be great too.
So since Escobedo got beat by a blown up Broner. Is that really going to count against in, in terms of legacy and getting big fights in the future?
This kid has no class, should have stayed in school.
Soley because of his attitude, I hope someone comes a long and serve him an entire circle of humble pie.

I don't think that's the case at all. The fight got more watchers than the free replay of Pac/Bradley -- one of the most successful HBO free shows in years. And Broner is bigger than ever as a result ("any publicity is good publicity"). And putting the weight and pre-/post-fight antics aside, he actually did look like the next Mayweather -- he looked unworldly fast and had big power to boot, like Floyd at the lower weight classes (albeit against much worse competition in Escobedo). You can't put the weight issue truly "to the side," agreed, but you also can't discount the performance for that reason to the point of saying he would have only looked "better than average" had he not had a 3.5 lb advantage. Hate him all you want (easy to do) but the guy clearly has enormous potential.Quote:

So I think HBO is very happy with the way this turned out. In fact, they're looking to put Broner back on in December already.
(Agree that Escobedo didn't suffer too much from this; but talk about a "legacy" for a guy who has always been a B-class fighter anyway is a little silly. He seems like a genuinely good person; but no one will remember who he was the day after he retires.)
Like I said a long time ago boxing needs "Characters" to stay relevant. People will tune in to see Broner lose and when he wins it will piss them off.
I'm pretty sure Broner "acting like Mayweather" is something HBO adores, as the real Mayweather is going to retire soon. So Broner is something they need ratings wise. Just as Timothy Bradley was "acting like Mayweather" in the leadup to the Pacquiao fight.
