If Floyd and Ward were the same weight....................
This would be the most interesting fight since Hagler vs Leonard for me.
Shame it can never happen, because matching their styles and abilities would be fascinating.
I think Ward will end up being regarded in the same kind of league as Hagler, Leonard and Duran!

Re: If Floyd and Ward were the same weight....................
I think you have to go with Floyd in that one... by a hair. Ward is definitely in his league. The biggest difference is that Floyd is faster, harder to hit, and more punishing offensively. He has all the intangibles Ward has but with a little more technique and natural ability. He also would have perhaps a larger reach advantage than Dawson had, but with much better inside fighting skills.
-
Re: If Floyd and Ward were the same weight....................
Agreed, although I do think Floyd is clearly a shade better. It's a shame Ward didn't come along 10 years earlier(or more), I think either Calzaghe or Hopkins would've matched up beautifully with him.
It's really hard to see anyone beating Ward now with his work ethic especially, who even gives him a good fight?

I think your dreaming!
Who is the best undefeated fighter that Ward has faced? His last opponent was made to drop down in weight and had lost to Pascal.
Ill give you that right now he is the best of the supermiddles. Although I think if Froch were to fight him again and put more pressure on, start faster like he did against Bute that he could do Ward.
Ward struggled with Bika big time to the point he felt he had to hold for dear life or be stopped. This isnt a future great and if Calzaghe was to come out of retirement and they fought at lightheavy id still rather bet my house on Calzaghe.

Re: If Floyd and Ward were the same weight....................
Ward is early in his career, given time I think he will leave a better legacy than Floyd. You cannot say Ward has avoided anyone, with Floyd you can.

What about SSM vs. PBF at Lightweight?
You know which one got me thinking last night and they did fight at the same weight Ward vs. RJJ?

I personally believe SSM v PBF @ LW, Shane would absolutely crush him and stop him inside of 9 rounds.
And Prime RJJ smokes anyone 175 and below.

Re: If Floyd and Ward were the same weight....................
Ward is a great fighter but he's not on PBF's level IMO and if they were the same weight and prime vs prime I see Floyd outfoxing him.
I don't fancy Ward's chances against RJJ at 168 prime for prime either, but I personally don't think anyone in the history of boxing beats RJJ at 168 prime for prime.
-
Floyd beats moseley at any prime.
Roy beats anyone at any era.

I think ward gives him a really tough fight, mostly because he's fast enough with his feet and elusiveness to make it hard for Roy to land, and he fights more within himself, we saw how Roy fought better opposition, and he had more trouble then say Mayweather because he wasn't the type of guy that really controlled distance, he lured guys in or try to overwhelm them with his speed. I don't think those tactics would work against Ward that well especially when you watch RJJ-Griffin I. That fight is a perfect example of a far more limited guy than Ward with a similar style giving RJJ a ton of trouble. I think I would favor RJJ, but its not a no brainer in his favor. This is the second best 168 IMO ever. He didn't have that much trouble with Bika I'm not sure what fight people were seeing... Calzaghe had just as much if not more trouble with Bika.

I too believe that RJJ was god from 160-175 as well as Mosley being the best lightweight with Duran being a close second (Speed trumps almost anything)

I think your forgetting Pernell Whitaker who would beat both.

Damn...How could I forget sweet pete? I stand to be corrected. Yes Pernell would be victorious.

Seriously? Pernell was quality but Roy was special.

Thats arguable.. Sweet Pea would beat floyd, because Floyd would try to outbox and outfox him and Sweet pea was the best at that. Shane however was a complete beast at LW with more power, speed, and lateral movement. He and Sweet Pea would have been a great fight. Floyd would be beaten by both though.

I think he was saying sweet pea would beat both SSM and Duran. Or SSM and PBF. Not RJJ....

Re: If Floyd and Ward were the same weight....................
Floyd and Ward I recon Floyd would win. If Ward was getting tagged (which he would) and then evetually went for the hug one arm fend off with the other routine and the ref didnt check it early and set the fight off on the right foot, then Floyd wouldnt rest and wait around during the splitting up or natural breaks in a messy in fight. He would be following with bunches of punches or setting angles as Ward moved in to grab etc He'd be scoring in all the spaces and gaps, he would be fitter and faster Floyd exploits people who only do what they have to do to win.

Re: If Floyd and Ward were the same weight....................
In regards to sweet pea I did mean that he would beat SSM and Hands of stone Duran. Although a fight with Shane Mosley at lightweight would be nerve wrecking to watch if you're a fan of either fighters which I am.
As for Roy, I truly believe that to this very day no one has come or gone that could have beaten him. I do hope this won't always be the case, simply because it would mean that 160-175 peaked in the 90's. I always dynamic and new changes to the sport. I have no problem saying that as great as The Brown Bomber Joe Louis was, he was wide open to overhand rights and a great tall heavyweight with a good chin, educated jab and a chopping heavy handed cross would have been a nightmare for him. But I digress... It is always exciting to see new talent surpass the benchmark that was set by old legends. It's even more exciting to be there live and to see it happen.

Yes... Same thing I say about Ali being open for left hooks all day long and the roy that fought Ruiz would have given him fits in a 12 round fight.

If one of the greatest left hookers ever could not cause too much damage and lose to Ali twice then what chance would Roy Jones have. Sure it may land with some speed but it will not have much effect. Could Roy tale Ali’s punches and deal with Ali’s speed? The way Ali beat Foster would be the way Ali would beat Jones.

I said he would have given him fits, not beat him. And Ali's speed would come to reality when placed next to Jones.

Dude the second Ali connected with a good punch or close to a good punch its lights out for Roy he would not have the balls to get in the ring with Ali anyhow he would get killed in there.

Benny Leonard, Joe Gans and Henry Armstrong may differ. In addition Jones would have struggled with the likes of Greb and Burley at 160 and Charles and Spinks at 175.
Anyway to the phantom match-up I cannot agree with the majority. I think a Ward v Floyd fight would be chalked full of narcoleptic moments.

I don't think Prime RJJ would have problem stepping in the ring with Ali because he wasn't a super large heavy... Again, no one said he would beat Ali. But a 200lbs Jones plus his speed would give him fits until the hypothetical point of Ali connecting...
-
Re: If Floyd and Ward were the same weight....................
If you were to ask Roy to step in the ring to fight a prime Ali i think he would demand 100 million dollars to do so or he would not even consider it i think your more confiedent then Roy would be.

Hey man, RJJ, Love that dude. I just think that from what I've seen of him since 1988. Ali wasn't that large of a heavyweight so at 200lbs vs a prime ali who during his prime never was over 220 and usually hovering around 213. A prime, undefeated RJJ I don't think he would have had a problem doing that. I just think people are judging him based of the latter stages of his career, not how confident he was when he p4p 1 for so many years.
Just like I believe the undefeated and confident SSM that beat ODLH in the first fight would beat any version of PBF.
