Why was Tito so obsessed with Roy and not with Oscar ????
Now Tito recieved a 10 million dollar purse for the De La Hoya fight, after his victory he was looking for a rematch with Oscar that would swap the purses of the first fight giving him 20 million and giving Oscar 10, Oscar having just as extreme ego as Tito if not more refused Trinidads offer, I don't know how close they came behind doors to an agreement or if either fighter ever budged on his demands but the fight fell through, after that he never showed interest in fighting Oscar again.
With RJJ Tito had some weird fascination with, he had begun to talk about fighting RJJ while still at WW, he vacated 154 in less than a year in an ambitious move to MW, had he beat Hopkins he would have fought Roy at a catchweight, he thought Roy was the ultimate measuring stick for his success. Finally after a decade of obsession he finally got his wish.
-
Re: Why was Tito so obsessed with Roy and not with Oscar ????
Roy was untouched at that point. Oscar had been dropped by a few people, despite winning. Roy was probably not attached to a big name promoter at the time (not sure if he was still with Murad or already self promoted). The price was cheaper, the reward greater in terms of notoriety (he already beat oscar). They were both country boys plain and simple. No hyping bs. I think it all came down to tito having a greater respect for roy and where his weight may have been taking him.

Re: Why was Tito so obsessed with Roy and not with Oscar ????
Tito beat Oscar so he had less to prove and more to lose.
He wanted Jones because he probably thought he could carry his punch up the weights but Hopkins told him different.

He was jousting at windmills.

To be fair, he was knocking people out all over the place at MW before the Hopkins fight.

Whoa, whoa, whoa... he did carry some of his power. But the fact of the Hopkins fight, as with all B-Hop fights, NO ONE hits Hopkins cleanly.
When was the FIRST time you have ever seen Hopkins hit cleanly and hard?? Not even in the Dawson fight or the Calzaghe fight.
No one hits B-Hop. No one knew when he fought Tito back then about how GOOD B-Hop really is/was.
Sure, most of his fight stink. Downright boring. But no one hits B-Hop cleanly for 12 rounds. No one! Give B-Hop some credit rather than taking away from Tito and his "so called" lack of power when he moved up!
-
Re: Why was Tito so obsessed with Roy and not with Oscar ????
Hopkins is not untouchable. Pascal of all people proved that when he flailed him down a few times. Hopkins was a naturally bigger guy used to taking middle weight punches. Add to that they worked over Tito before the fight. Naseem richardson and the hand wrap controversy, the squabbles at the press conferences, the flag throwing issue. It was all done intentionally to wear Tito down. Tito was raging..and had the pressure of a whole island on his shoulders.
Did they need that to beat Tito? probably not Tito is a fairly straight ahead fighter and hopkins is going to work over a fighter like that with fouling, talking and smothering and working a kid like Tito (who needs room to punch) over on the inside. So it wasn't necessary but good insurance. The deck was stacked against Tito by the time the bell range for round 1 but the promotion made things seem much more even.
-
Re: Why was Tito so obsessed with Roy and not with Oscar ????
tito also knew he got a gift against oscar and that oscar wouldn't have eased off towards the end if there was second fight.

Tito fought one time at MW prior to Hopkins and that was to Joppy.

I saw the Tito-Hopkins fight, believe me Hopkins got hit, Tito punch didn't effect him much.

I wouldn't call running around the ring for dear life " eased off ", he was tired and figured that was his best way to finish the fight.

If Tito got thrown off by that bush league stuff, then he isn't championship material IMO. If all an opponent needs to do to throw you off your game is throw a minature flag, you SUCK.
Tito got whipped by a superior fighter, plain and simple.

Advantages at height, reach, weight, etc had more to do with it.

Re: Why was Tito so obsessed with Roy and not with Oscar ????
Of course they were advantages, but p4p Bhop is a much better fighter than Tito ever was. The best fighter won. Bhop made Tito look like a scared little boy in there, like he did to a ton of guys before and after Tito.
Tito showed brutal power in obliterating guys at 154 and then Joppy at MW, and Joppy was a big, strapping, durable MW, so I don't buy this "he never carried his power up to MW" thing.

NO, the BIGGER fighter won, you think he made Tito look like a scared little boy lol ??? That guy had no surrender in him the whole fight he never stopped moving forward and showed a tone of heart despite all the punishment he took, you want to see a scared little boy watch the De La Hoya - Hopkins fight and watch Oscar pound on the canvas over a tap on the ribs.
So since Trinidad beat Joppy you think he was a natural MW ???? WTF, in that case I guess RJJ was a natural heavyweight since he beat Ruiz, I guess Pac was a natural JMW since he beat Margarito, lol.
-
Re: Why was Tito so obsessed with Roy and not with Oscar ????
Tito had heart and courage for sure, but he had absolutely no idea how to go about dealing with Bernard's style. He was reduced to plodding forward and looking for the one big punch while getting eaten alive on the inside and from range. He was totally out of his class. This wasn't a bigger guy imposing his will on a smaller guy, this was a guy applying his superior craft on another guy and making him look stupid.
And I never said Trinidad was a natural MW. And if I did say that, I didn't say it was because he beat Joppy.
What I said was that the notion that Trinidad didn't carry power up to middleweight was stupid because he got in there with a LEGIT, MASSIVE, DURABLE middleweight and destroyed him with his power. We're not talking about getting in there with a journeyman middleweight: Joppy was top 5 at the time. World class. And Tito destroyed him.
Your Roy Jones analogy is totally irrelevant. Jones, despite being able to hit Ruiz at will, couldn't hurt Ruiz at all, which was further proof that he didn't belong at HW.
I believe Tito was a natural 154lber and that was a good weight for him, but we're only talking about going up one division. Does Hagler not deserve credit for beating Hearns and Duran, who were also coming up from WW and LMW?

This is actually one of your best post ever. If you give Hopkins credit for beating Tito ( and you give Hagler as an example ) why don't you give him credit for beating De La Hoya.
-
Re: Why was Tito so obsessed with Roy and not with Oscar ????
De La Hoya and Trinidad really should of fought 3 times. But Trinidad didn't want to. He knew he got a gift in there first fight. He knew in his heart he couldn't beat him. So he did everything he could to not make the fight. From demanding Oscar get 5 million while he took 20 million. And demanding the fight take place in Puerto Rico. Trinidad had deluded himself into thinking he was the draw. Oscar offered him a guaranteed 15 million for a rematch. Trinidad instead takes 4 million to fight David Reid. That proves he wanted nothing to do with Oscar De La Hoya

I give him credit for beating De La Hoya. Like Tito, DLH belonged at 154lb and not MW, but he was still a fantastic fighter with speed and skill, and I still believe he won a handful of those early rounds vs Hopkins.

That was smart from Tito to beat an undefeated olmpian at a higher weight and then be in a stronger position to negotiate.

Trinidad's combined purses for fighting David Reid, Mamadou Thiam, Fernando Vargas and William Joppy is still less than the 15 million De La Hoya offered him. Yeah real smart

Re: Why was Tito so obsessed with Roy and not with Oscar ????
Tito did bad against great fighters who could box and could never adapt and never had a plan b. He got a huge gift against Oscar, then went on to lose every round against Bhop and then lose every round against Winky. Roy was pretty shot but still won every round but he was alot bigger as well.

From that point it was smart. Cuz he would of lost again to De La Hoya.

Not a huge difference, if your power holds at LMW then not too far fetched hat you can hold it at MW.

his power didn't hold against hopkins cause his hands weren't wrapped in the special way his father always wrapped them.
watch the fight tito. lands a few punches early and quickly realizes that he has no power. hopkins quickly realizes that tito has no plan b. easy fight for b-hop.

VD is no longer in his prime.
1. Yes I agree 100 percent they should have fought three times, which is why I made this thread.
2. Trinidad was one of the many boxers who believed that Oscar did not deserve his popularity, there were other great boxers at the time that werent getting a quarter of what he was getting, he got into an ego battle with Oscar, in their first fight he didn't have enough leverage to demand a 50-50 split despite being the champ for 6 years, so after his victory he used that as leverage.
3. Trinidad received 10 million for the fight and Oscar 20, Due to ego Tito wanted a swap in the rematch and Oscar's camp denied it, how you came up with 5 million is beyond me, and there is no evidence saying that Oscars camp ever offered anything close to a split.
4. Trinidad never wanted that fight to be on the Island, any fight in PR is a novelty fight, a fight put on for the local fans in appreciation for their support and its not about the revenue, if Tito wanted home turf advantage in a mega fight it would have been at MSG.

Tito's 3 career losses were against
Hopkins
Wright
Jones
Which one of those guys could Oscar beat???? We already know not Hopkins.

I only deal in facts

To be fair, he was knocking people out all over the place at MW before the Hopkins fight.
Tito fought one time at MW prior to Hopkins and that was to Joppy.
He went to light middle first.
Yea tell Mayorga that.
i'm sure his handwraps were back to normal(loaded) when he fought mayorga.
he never used LOADED wraps, even Nazeem Richardson went into detail explaining the big differences between what happened in Hopkins/Trinidad pre fight and Margarito/Mosley (minimum) pre fight, Trinidad's hands had more of the gauze wrapped further down the hand so that it was tighter nothing loaded like Margarito who had plaster coated wraps, apples and oranges, the only issue was that Trinidad's style of wraps weren't permitted in NY which is where the fight was but they were fully legal and permitted in Vegas where most of his fights took place

Re: Why was Tito so obsessed with Roy and not with Oscar ????
I think Trinidad just wanted to fight the guy who was seen for years as the best pound-for-pound fighter in boxing.
They used to have Roy Jones and De La Hoya constantly switching places between p4p#1 and p4p#2.
I didn't understand the debate at all, clearly Roy Jones was a far more talented superior fighter.
De La Hoya was damn good of course and a multiple Chap across many weight classes, but a prime Roy Jones was simply phenomenal.
That rematch with Montell Griffin showcased Roy at his best.
I think Trinidad wanted to get in the ring with him...

The one fight where Tito wasn't allowed to have his father wrap his hands the way he always did, Tito suddenly had no KO power.
