Who is the next boxing superstar?
After watching floyd tonight and with only a year left of fighting I am starting to wonder who is the next superstar that will stand out from the crowd..
Who would you put say has all the credentials to keep it going.
-
Re: Who is the next boxing superstar?
If he even steps up in competition and proves himself to be legitimate, I think it could be Deontay Wilder.
-
GGG could be if he would give up the soft seat of middleweight.
-
Re: Who is the next boxing superstar?
Looking for a superstar is much like looking for something you "lost" and always ask about location......stop looking, let it rise and be noticed on his own merit! There are 101 elements we put in a star now. Just let em prove they can fight loud, talk less
Edit: Its sure as fook not Wilder.
-
Re: Who is the next boxing superstar?
-
Whoever the powers that be want it to be - basically whoever would make them the most money. Doesn't even have to be the most outstanding talent but just someone people will pay to see over and over again
-
Re: Who is the next boxing superstar?
The three with the biggest potential are Canelo, Keith Thurman and GGG. All three need career-defining wins.
-
Re: Who is the next boxing superstar?
An outside choice but if Eubank Jr keeps winning he has all the ingredients to be massive and in a weight range with plenty of name opponents.
We are looking for a future superstar. So someone who will emerge 2016? When Floyd has left.
Golovkin wont be it. Hes not a big crowd puller now and has held a Belt since 2010!
-
Re: Who is the next boxing superstar?
It might be Keith Thurman or maybe a fighter we don't know or haven't heard much of yet.

I asked this question a little earlier about what does boxing do when Floyd retires. Everyone said it would be fine, and no doubt it will be fine- even with the UFC looming in the background. But, what DO we do when Floyd and Manny retire??
What in the world do we do??
-
Re: Who is the next boxing superstar?
Boxing has been booming and things have been happening as a result of those two starts, the money they generate for their respective promotional companies, and the hype they create and attention it puts on the sport- better if you are on their undercard.
What in the world happens?? We don't know!!!

Re: Who is the next boxing superstar?
Yesterday it was Porter..
For his sake and sanity...Thurman needs to watch that build up and fight a few times.

Great post and there are so many road blocks these days and monopolies etc. I often wonder how many legit greats get or have gotten lost in the shuffle.

Thurman is NOT the man. He doesn't have mass fan appeal. Danny Garcia COULD be the man, if he stays away from Floyd Mayweather and Manny until they either retire or Manny becomes a shell of himself physically.
Manny still looks better, more fluid and fight ready than Floyd does. By far.
With respect to Garcia- Floyd may just win out on him and embarrass him skill wise. But Manny will bruise him, batter him, beat him up and break his spirit at this stage.
Both Manny and Floyd win their fights- but Manny beats you up a bit more than Floyd does. Does more damage and hurts your core fight spirit more than Floyd does.
-
Re: Who is the next boxing superstar?
Garcia has yet to fight 147 and that's where he is headed. Unless he can bring some more lightweights along to beat up I'm not convinced he'll have an easy go of it either. He has some rebuilding to do and while the Matthysse was very solid this is a "what have you done lately sport"...and he hasn't exactly been stellar. Last nights Floyd would very much embarrass him skill wise I believe. Guys like Thurman are still in a flavor of the month kind of running. The network is pushing them like crazy, and for what he lacks in refined skill and achievement Thurman is the type who 'jumps off the screen', he is very charismatic and almost comes off like a freekin professional wrestler in interviews with the speaking in 3rd person. Kid has flair but should not fool himself into thinking that qualifies as substance. The walk to the ring is littered and cluttered with the shells and shadows of ones who were supposed to be "the next".

Boxing has too much manufacturing today. Its all about marketing..of course, but we lose the opportunity in discovering hidden gems and some talents by assuming and not asking for the full menu.

Exactly my sentiments on Thurman. He is so far from being "the man" until it's funny the way he hypes himself up to be that. Broner tried the same thing, and then came back to reality when he got hit in the face, several times, against Maidana.
Garcia could be the man. He could. A rematch with Matthysse isn't necessary, but I feel he would win again if this turns to be the case.
Garcia needs an arch-nemesis. Like how Ali had Frazier and Foreman, and to some extent Liston and Norton. Like how Floyd had Corrales, was chasing the shadow of Oscar and how the fight with Manny still could be made. I doubt that it will be made, but it has made for interesting hype surrounding them to be interesting.
Thurman could be that arch-nemesis. Matthysse was it to a certain degree, but Matthysse needed more hyping. Brook, if packaged properly, could be a good nemesis. But, without a doubt, Garcia needs one or two build up fights to be labeled as "the man"... and win those in grand style.

GGG is a little old, but his style n the quick blow outs will allow him to enjoy longevity. I think he has the best chance to be the next big superstar.
If Thurman stays humble n hungry n keeps improving, he has a chance. I didn't think Porter was a guarantee n I don't think Thurman is either. Both have potential, but so did Broner n Berto.
If Canelo gets a different trainer, one to take him to the next level n round him out, he will be the man. He has a large following already n a willingness to take on the best.
Crawford is my outside choice to take over next. He has all of the tools and is the only new guy I see who is a complete fighter.
If u think about it, u don't see guys like Hop, Floyd, Hagler, Toney, Sweet Pea, Oscar, Tito, Evander...etc., anymore. Guys like Canelo have talent but don't have the versatility, depth n learned tools necessary to compete at that level

Golovkin wont be it. Hes not a big crowd puller now and has held a Belt since 2010!
Hmm, Eubank Jr is getting his chance to become a national superstar now against Saunders. Just like his old man v Benn, he didnt have any name opponents and battered Benn. This is the start of a special fighter.

A lot of top names in the sport are giving Eubank Jr glowing praise after seeing him in action or facing him in sparring. Froch thought enough of him to use him in his most important fight. Could billy Joe force Froch back?

I like Crawford too, but I want to see more of him. Bey just won a belt, but he is going to get chopped to pieces soon, in my opinion.

Yeh, I don't see Bey elevating to another level. To me he has that glowing look of fragility, though benifiting from huge promotion...and a shit all judge with 119-109?! Two good calls on Crawford, think he is becoming one of the more improved and diverse guys out there. Unfortunately on the otherside of the coin he has the charisma and limelight personality of cold cereal outside of Nebraska.

Re: Who is the next boxing superstar?
More than likely it won't be just 1 person, it will be a "class" in 1 weight division or another. In the past we've worried "Who comes after Leonard, Duran, Hearns, Hagler?", "Who comes after Lewis, Tyson, Holyfield?", "Who comes after Oscar, Mosley, Trinidad?", "Who comes after Ali, Frazier, Foreman?"
There's always someone or a group of people
There are some guys who have opportunities: Carlos Diaz Ramirez 19 years old 15(8KO)-0-0, Joel Diaz Jr. 22 years old 17(13 KO)-0-0, Danny Garcia 26 years old 29(17 KO)-0-0, Jesse Vargas 25 years old 25(5 KO)-0-0, Frankie Gomez 22 years old 18(13 KO)-0-0, Errol Spence 24 years old 14 (11KO)-0-0, Demetrius Andrade 26 years old 21(14KO)-0-0....and boxrec will not let me search anymore....fuckers.
After a good summer Olympics we will have some more prospects and maybe we'll get a good class in.

Lomachenko could be one. Look how much he's improved between the Salido and Russell Jr. fights. He just needs a little more experience in the pros, and he'll be almost unstoppable.

Mike tyson was the heavyweight division from 86 to 90. No one has ever held all the titles together for as long since.

Keep preaching your love of Tyson man, it doesn't change the reality of the situation which is A) He was in the right place at the right time and STILL couldn't hang on to success and B ) Lewis and Holyfield beat the fuck out of him...but if you'd rather compare him to OLD Holmes and Frank Bruno be my guest. I thought I was being kind to him by grouping him in with good company, but I guess you're right he wasn't even competitive vs Evander and Lennox so no reason to list him in there.

This gets said a lot. As if Tysons era of the late eighties was shit.
Tyson wiped the floor with Holmes. Holmes went on 4 years later to push Holyfield to a competitive 12 rounds.....
Holmes also beat Mercer clearly. The same Mercer who was robbed against Lewis.....
Basically, Tyson's left overs were too good for 90s fighters.

No probably not because he is not a super middle weight unlike JR who thinks he has the right to fight at any weight, against anyone, without having to fight a live body first. It would take Froch a while to catch Saunders though.

How do you figure that Evander and Lennox never owned the division? Especially Lennox, that guy cleaned out the division when it was in much better shape than when Tyson was champ.

Tyson's era was shit. There just wasn't the depth with fat guys like Tubbs, Page, Witherspoon, limited guys like Smith, Tucker and Ruddock or has beens like Holmes and Spinks (who was also tiny). Say whatever you want to rationalize your admiration of Tyson, but the guy has only one win over a HOF heavyweight and that was a washed up Holmes. Spinks will be a HOFer, but not for what he did at heavy, just in case someone wanted to try and sharpshoot.
The 90's had Foreman, Evander, Lewis, Bowe, Tyson, the Klitschko brothers, Moorer, Byrd, Ibeabuchi...etc. No competition between the retreads Tyson feasted on and the depth and caliber during the 90's.

Holyfield's victory over Tyson is a semi-valid one, but Lewis beat the fat, washed up shell of what used to be Mike Tyson. Tyson went on to lose two of his next three fights to Williams and McBride for fook sake. That's the Tyson Lewis beat - the shot Mike Tyson. I can't believe people think Lewis' victory over him is a credible one.
The young, dedicated and focused 80s Tyson is a completely different proposition.

When did either dominate the division as long as Tyson did?
Neither were good enough to be head and shoulders above the rest of the division.
Just because Mayweather is so much better than everyone else does not make it a weak era, just like Tyson was so gifted for a few years he was almost untouchable and had the media ranking him alongside Ali at the time. Neither Holyfield or Lewis have been thought of as highly during their short reigns.
Tyson wouldn't have lost to Moorer, Rahman or McCall. Your judging him on the bersion that was out of boxing for 4 years.
