Re: Justice!!! Naz goes into Hall of Fame. Fact.
I really did enjoy Hamed v MAB , it is one of my favourite fights , he was such an understated classy fighter who never brought religion into the ring.
Yes I miss him a lot.

Re: Justice!!! Naz goes into Hall of Fame. Fact.
Come on Al, we can appreciate boxers for being boxers without bringing their personal lives to the table. I see Naz as a complete and utter moron but still respect him as a great entertaining fighter.
I think Floyd and Manny are complete and utter morons but I still admire their amazing boxing talent.
I could go on all night listing the people I think are fucking morons......
-
Re: Justice!!! Naz goes into Hall of Fame. Fact.
We can agree he was entertaining... Great is a stretch... WHO did he beat?

Feel free to pick...
You have WBC, WBA (Lineal), WBO and IBF champions to choose from.
Naz was 16-0 (14 KO's) in "World" Title fights. 10-1 (8 KO's) against former or current "world" champions.

Re: Justice!!! Naz goes into Hall of Fame. Fact.
Naz was terrific!
I loved watching him fight AND I loved watching him get his ass handed by MAB.
Pure entertainment!
Congrats Naz!!!

I said WHO, not what.
Would you say that Kevin Kelley was the best person that he ever beat?
Lets talk fighters, not trinkets... We're throwing the word 'great' around here after all.

Who did Jim Lampley beat to get in? Aside from his wife.

Re: Justice!!! Naz goes into Hall of Fame. Fact.
I never for once ever thought that Naz would not be let into the HOF. Perhaps a second ballot, but sure way to get in.
Naz retired too early. jmo.... should have rematches MAB.

I said great "entertainer." I didn't say "great" as in Ray Robinson great. But obviously Naz is regarded as a GREAT featherweight, hence why he's getting inducted into the hall of fame.
Lets talk fighters?
How old were you when Naz won his first "world" title?

Probably older than you where :)

Re: Justice!!! Naz goes into Hall of Fame. Fact.
Sorry but I never rated Hamed as anywhere near great. Sure he was all bullshit & hype till he got his ass well & truly handed to him by Marco Antonio Barrera. Then what happened? Hamed self imploded. He was done finished could not take defeat like a man.
The same thing will; happen with Floyd Mayweather. The first time he meets a legitimate contender on a level playing field he'll get his ass handed to him too. If & bwhen that happens they'll have to put him on a suicide watch

Fenster's unable to tell me the best fighter Hamed beat, would anybody else like to?

I can't pick Naz's best win, there are too many, that's why he's going in the Hall of Fame.
Why can't you answer how old you were when Naz beat Steve Robinson? That Welsh fella was obviously useless, right?

I don't think that's even possible. Lawrence Krauss or Brian Cox might be able to help us though.

Would you rather do a top ten instead Fenster?

What does that even mean? Does it apply to just Hamed or to everyone inducted and if it does apply to everyone then why single out Hamed?
One of the highlights of my boxing viewership was watching one of my favourite fighters in Mab beat him up but that does not mean he should not get in the Hall.
The only criteria the Hall has is that there is no criteria. Its been a Hall of mediocrity for years now and along the way it has forgotten about several that should have been inducted but who fall down or off the list as new names are added to the list each year.
Others get in and have gotten in just by winning a strap. Well he had three of them and was the recognized man (lineal champ) at that weight. That more then qualifies based on modern day standards used. Hell Bowe got in right along side him and Gatti recently got in.There are many others in there that do not have the accomplishments that he has.
He also gets big points for putting the featherweight division on the map in his era and increasing the marketability of others then and for years to come. Vasquez made 600 grand against Hamed, by far his biggest payday. This came immediately after he was stripped by the WBA for failing to fight Cermeno which was a Don King screw up. Had he not been stripped, Hamed would have went on to be the first undisputed champion since Saldivar in 1967. As it is he's the first unified one since Vincente. That alone also guarantees him a ticket. And if the Hall's entry was based on competition alone, it would be half empty. I hated the prick but I have no qualms about him getting in.

It means they induct Hamed to invite more Brits and sell more beer and such. This is how they return the budget invested. From what I saw, apparently, sometimes with the budget,, they can induct a washed up legend who is not a money drawer anymore. it is 100% business. They need to pay bills and such.

What? You lost me. You have to be retired for 5 years before you are even become eligible so I'm not understanding that anymore then the other statement. All inductees are washed up and dont draw money anymore.

Adam was 8 when that fight happened.
Being the old man I was at the time (10) I remember the fight well.
-
Re: Justice!!! Naz goes into Hall of Fame. Fact.
I was 9 I think, 1 year for each loss Robinson had before Hamed made it 10.
If a top 1 is too restrictive and a top 10 is obviously too wide, how about a top 5?
-
Re: Justice!!! Naz goes into Hall of Fame. Fact.
Not as well as ICB does. He remembers The rumble in the Jungle like it was yesterday.
-
Re: Justice!!! Naz goes into Hall of Fame. Fact.
So you was 9, Adam. Which makes you around 16 when Naz retired? Nice. What an impact he had on you.
Steve Robinson beat Colin McMillan (ask Scrap about him he was his trainer), Paul Hodkinson (former WBC champ), Duke McKenzie (three division "world" champ) and Freddy Cruz (former "world" title challenger) during his eight fight unbeaten streak as WBO champ.
I thought Robinson was a very good fighter at the time, that had beaten good fighters.
What did you think of him at the time?
-
Re: Justice!!! Naz goes into Hall of Fame. Fact.
Good on him for getting in,had fun watching him,he got away with some outrageous moves.
Whats the implication on who was the best fighter he fought? It was Mab.
Soto was no bum. There are others who were gifted fighters with long careers, loosened a fair few peoples bolts for good, ruined some fighters on the spot.
People seem to take offense when a fighter does it not sticking to traditional boxing, aside from the big mouth, disrespect of other fighters and the religious stuff.
Wish JMM had fought him back in the day, think he wanted to be the king of Mexico instead though and didnt want to be derailed on his aim at pulling the crowns off Mab and Morrales back then by some hard hitting outsider from Britain. Could of ended everything before it begun :-\.

I'd put guys like McCullough, Vasquez, Johnson, Kelley, Soto, Medina, Ingle all in the same pot and say take your pick. I think people look at that pot of fighters and say (obligation comes into it a fair bit) world rated operators who were past, current or future World champions or you say they were all mediocre.
By my own definition they were all World class fighters.
For what it's worth, and this doesn't really add or detract from Naz's standing, the gloss had already come off when he beat them all.
-
Re: Justice!!! Naz goes into Hall of Fame. Fact.
Delighted for the guy. My all-time favorite boxer.
-
Re: Justice!!! Naz goes into Hall of Fame. Fact.
Hopefully this will stop Fenster taking this any further.
-
Re: Justice!!! Naz goes into Hall of Fame. Fact.
You're right Fenster, being 9 means that he had no impact on me at all. Had I been old enough to be aware of him then who knows how all of the hype and excitement would have tainted my views.
I didn't get caught up in the hype like you 'was'.
All that gets left once the hype dies is the substance.
I'd agree with your list Memphis, but there's nobody of the Morales/Barrera/Marquez calibre, no elite fighter at their peak... A decent handful of decent fighters, even world level fighters do not make for more than a good career (which Hamed had, don't get me wrong). Not enough for me to call him one of the greatest.
In terms of career, I'd put him about level with Ricky Hatton. Some seem to think he was the eras answer Pacquiao or Mayweather :vd:

Re: Justice!!! Naz goes into Hall of Fame. Fact.
Adam, he clearly had an impact on you at some point in your young life. He was in his pomp before you had pubes. You have a strong opinion about him.
I don't know anyone that ever claimed Naz was as "great" as the fighters you've named in that post - Manny, Floyd, Barrera, Marquez, Morales and Hatton. But what do they have in common? They'll all be sitting alongside Naz in the Hall of Fame when eligible. Good company.
To quote the late Glyn Leach (Boxing Monthly editor) - "To define Hamed with cold statistics would be failing to understand the phenomenon. Without question, the Prince was the most exciting fighter of his era, an unorthodox power-puncher with natural talent to burn. His ring entrances were more WWE than Shawn Michaels himself and his fights were must-see events."
