It was a quick ko so the training could not be used as an excuse for the loss.
Style of Hatton suited Manny who was on fire at the time and that probably was the main reason for the devastating defeat of Ricky.
I don't think it was the drain of making the weight, bad relationship with the trainer or loss to Floyd for the reason for the early ko.
Pac was reaching his peak then. Hatton had peaked.
Was stunned. Not so much that Hatton was defeated but never thought he’d be a 2 round job for anyone no matter how good they were.
If you can’t stay sober in camp you’re going to have a bad night.
Because pacquiao was a much better fighter. Everyone he fought and beat for several years afterwards would have also beaten Hatton. I doubt anyone is about to suggest that with a better training camp, Hatton could have taken that punch, so.... what, he would have totally reinvented himself and managed to avoid getting hit? He only fought the way he knew how, that’s why the 7 pounds made such a difference when he fought at welter, even though he probably put on 70 when he wasn’t training.
I agree PAC was the far better fighter and wins the fight every time but there is no denying Ricky ignored what he was instructed to do the entire camp. Leaping in with hooks got him hurt repeatedly before the big left hand finished it. If he jabs his way in as instructed it’s a different fight. Same outcome but different fight.
His head was on a platter, he was done as an elite fighter
Difference in skill set. VAST difference. All this nonsense about Ricky fighting for p4p both with Floyd and with Pac simply evaporated with the thorough beatdown he received in both instances.
Whenever fighters blame training camps I take it with a pinch of salt, however, I believe Hatton who swears blind he should have never been in the ring that night, as insiders have confirmed he was physically and mentally messed up all through the camp.
However, Pac's electric, vicious, pin point counters and speed would have always gave Hatton kittens.
I reckon Hatton could've always been a 2-round blowout job, even in his prime, but he did know how to look after himself and box "smart," and could have fought to survive like Cotto, Mosley and Clottey did after realising they're out of their depth.
A-side meth.
I meant the "best possible Hatton" could have done better than getting shot dead inside 6 minutes, however, even the "best possible Hatton" might have been annihilated as he was stupid enough to try to win.
The other guys stopped fighting after six minutes for fear of being Hatton'd.
A prime Hatton-Cotto fight at 140 would have been interesting. They were all too big for him from 147 though, yeah.
Wash your mouth out.
Perfect storm. Hatton mentally was not the same after Floyd. Paulie was no prep for pacman. Manny was always going to catch anyone who just stood in front of him, throwing a jab like that was not Ricky's style but even the beast version of Hatton gets found out by mannys speed. Hatton looked like a ghost he, left way too much in the gym and then Mayweathers,'coaching' was about as helpful as a kick in the bollocks.
He was f****d on the way to the ring and you could see it.
Mosley shut it down, and it was apparent to everyone who watched the fight. It's reminiscent of his bewildering shutdown against Floyd, after having hurt him with a huge right hand early in the fight. Clottey was a defense-first, durable tough fighter whose calling card was having never lost by knockout. But Cotto fought hard and held his own for a couple of rounds, only to get staggered early, and eventually getting knocked out late in the fight. I don't remember Cotto shutting it down. I do remember though, just as Hatton's corner gets blamed for its prep against Pacquiao, Cotto had no business whatsoever having Joe Santiago as his trainer for one of the biggest fights of his career.
And yes.... prime Cotto vs. Hatton at 140 would've been interesting.
I really wanted Hatton to win that and it broke my heart to see him so outclassed. He looked bewildered and lost between rounds not even knowing who to listen to which says a lot about the preparation. He came out bravely in round 2 but it was kamikaze against a fighter so much faster.
Hatton was his own worst enemy between fights and I think it told badly against Manny. His chin was not as resiliant and he was stiff and also not as boxing smart as he used to be. It led to a performance that even today I struggle to sit through. Pure devastation.
It was all wrong and Manny turned out to be not a smaller man whence him able to go to WW and stay there and permanently damage other fighters.
Pac was at his best and Hatton wasfighting his demons and recovering from a KO. Even against Lazcano (?) he looked on shaky legs a couple of times and a fight with Paulie doesn't show you can still take a punch.
Hatton was obsessed with the pound for pound title..he lost to Mayweather and mentally collapsed.
He wouldn’t have beaten Pac anyway at any stage of his career..he loved to drink and gain weight and just wasn’t disciplined enough.
When was the last time anybody saw Manny or Floyd fat like Morales or Hatton? Yes, definitely a difference in application and attitude.
Why was Pac able to blast Hatton?
Ricky was older, slower, and his body had yo-yoed up and down in weight too much. Plus Manny Pacquiao may have been a guy who juiced....not saying he absolutely did, but there are questions about him just like there are questions about Juan Manuel Marquez.
Just watched it again for first time in ages.
Hatton was nowhere and Pac was in the zone of his career.
That slow mo from behind Hatton of the ko punch sending ripples down his head still gives me the shivers :-\
Oh yeah, that KO was just BRUTAL man.
I think even in Hatton's prime he would have had trouble with Pacquiao's style just because he bounced around in and out and didn't get trapped against the ropes. Ricky could do the work now, but his best was vs an opponent with slower feet that he could bully and use his weight and muscle against.
It's why I think Cotto would have been a disastrous fight for Ricky...still wanted to see it though at 140 or 147.
I still think Hatton-Gatti or Hatton-Ward or Hatton-JMM even would have been nice....Hatton-Corrales would have been good too.
Ricky was a mauler and had some good fights, some that looked more like wrestling, but he could have had even more really amazing bouts, probably best for his current health that he didn't though. Hell of a career.
No one beats peak and fully motivated Ricky Hatton the day he beat Kostya, in England, own ref, own fans etc
How old was Tszyu then?
I could think of a handful of fighters who would have beaten him...don't want to take anything away from his biggest win, but come now be serious.
Hatton vs Zab Judah around the time he fought Floyd would have actually been a good little match. Zab was ever the under achiever, but was still tricky and certainly had good pop in his punches and good handspeed. Would have been good. Acelino Freitas would have also been good earlier in Ricky's career, big power...would have been good wins for Ricky.
The focused zab Judah would have iced 3 Ricky hattons at once, then ran for President and won, gone back in time, knocked Hannibal and all his elephants out, conquered Rome by himself, and shown those clowns how to build some arches.
Hatton would have mauled and beat up Zab Judah. The ref would allow punches low by Ricky to count. He would not be denied that night.
Zab Judah is a misunderstood artist. He only tried in one fight ever, so that for centuries to come only a very small percentage of fans will truly know who the best ever was. For most of his fights he had too much empathy for his opponents to even train in case he killed them by accident. I was talking to a couple of bouncers at the Barclays centre who were saying he may make a comeback and win the HW title in 2025.
