I HIGHLY doubt it was $6 million. I believe the promoter in the article is making the point it wouldn't have mattered if it was $6 million because Sergio wasn't accepting a fight with Pirog. I don't believe he was literally saying it was $6 million.

So, Dibella said that HBO didn't express any interest in going to Russia for the fight and the maximum of the offer was $3 million.

It's probably a good business decision for Martinez. However, I believe Martinez's team are kidding themselves if they think they'll get a fight with anyone under the Top Rank banner. Chavez Jr. No. Cotto. No. Margarito. No. Pacquiao. No. But, let's say that HBO would pay Martinez $1 million for a fight against Macklin while Pirog fights on HBO against Geale or another of the top middleweights around the same time. It may make more sense for both parties to let the fight build up.

I think Pirog is probably on roughly the same level as Barker. He's looked like shit ever since he upset Jacobs (who I think would tune him if they fought again). Pirog also doesn't have the defense or the safety-first mentality of Barker. Martinez would beat him handily.

I agree, pretty sure that Jacobs just let Pirog look really good on that night. Haven't seen Jacobs fight anyone since then so no idea how a rematch would go. PIrog has talent but seems to square up religiously, he tries to switchhit coming foward so often I think it leaves him wide open a lot of the time. And once he does get inside he loads up what are basically arm punches, I think he's asking to be KO'ed personally.

Frankly, Pirog v. Martinez is the most intriguing fight to be made at middleweight. I don't buy any of Dibella's statements about why the Pirog fight doesn't make sense. He says they won't fight Pirog because the WBO screwed Martinez by giving Pirog the belt. That's nonsense because Martinez wants the fight with Chavez Jr. so much and the WBC scewed Martinez to give Chavez Jr. the belt. He contends that Pirog isn't known to the average US boxing fan. That's also nonsense because neither was Darren Barker nor Sergiy Dzinziruk. He asserts that Pirog should fight Quillin for a Martinez fight. Who did Barker or Dzinziruk have to beat for a Martinez fight? Again, nonsense. Lastly, he says the money isn't enough. Yet, Pirog offered Martinez $3 million, which is more than twice what Martinez was offered to face Barker. The bottom line is that they think they have a shot for a fight with a big name e.g. Margarito or Mayweather and a win over a big name means more money for fights in the future even a loss gives him good exposure. The other thing is at this point the risk isn't worth it when he could fight Macklin for $1 million on HBO.

I favor Martinez over Pirog, but I believe he's a tougher fight than Macklin or Barker. Pirog is big and strong for a middleweight and he's pretty slick. Although he looked poor against the Argentine, he looked better against Martirosyan in his last fight.
