Default After watching a prime Roy Jones on TV last night he was far from unbeatable.

Watched his program on Satanta last night and it supprised me in a number of ways.

First his speed was amazing, second was at times he was not that elusive and looked far from unbeatble.

I think people only remember his good points and forget the bad.

If he had fought Nigel Benn it would have been a great fight.Jones would be favorate but Benn would be in with a shot.

Also,Calzaghe would have given jones lot of problems IMO.

It was'nt that I was not impressed its just I think your mind looks back on things in that past as better than they are now.

I have got all of Jones fights on DVD somwhere and in a lot of his fights he does very little.Just throwes the fast odd lead left hook then moves away not willing to take a chance to go for the KO.

Thats because sometimes his fights were so easy he didn't need to do anything more. Take the Richard Hall fight for example he could of finished him off in the 1st round, but instead he toyed with him like RJJ often did with opponents.

Merqui Sosa who had an iron chin and had never been knocked down, coming into the RJJ fight got slaughtered when he tried to swarm.

And also check out RJJ's fight with Bryant Brannon, who is similar to Glen Johnson.

    Both Vids wont play.

I am not doubting Roys greatness its just he was not unbeatable.

It has always bugged me why he did not fight Benn because it would have been a much bigger fight than any of the other he had at the time.
The only reason I can think of is because he feared Benns power.Which is also the reason he did not try to finnised hurt fighters.

    Like who?

Merqui Sosa, Julio Gonzalez, At times David Telesco, James Toney(when he tried to keep Roy on the ropes), Pazienza, Bannon, Clinton Woods... he fought more swarmers then anything else.

Watch him against Telesco or a legit fighter like Reggie Johnson you will see Roy using absolutely amazing combinations nobody ever even thought of. Once again say which fight you were watching because IMO there are only one fight in his prime that makes him look beatable and thats against Montell Griffin, He didn't prepare well enough for that fight and underestimated Griffin, but look what happened in the second fight.

The other fight was against Eric Harding and he was already 33, but he just didn't get off.

As for Nigel Benn, are you kidding me? Nigel Benn was a B class fighter who was beaten by almost every good fighter he faced. Roy would have knocked him out in the early rounds, Benn was so slow, so technically poor he would have been eaten alive. Nigel Benn is the most overrated fighter from the 90's.

The two guys I see giving Roy Jones Jr the most trouble would have to have been
prime Michael Nunn(so tall and fast, I think it would be an interesting match up)
and Thomas Hearns(once again almost impossible to outbox) however I likely see Roy ko'ing him with a right hand because he is so open for it, and he would have never seen anybody throw the punches that Jones does which IMO would throw him off badly.

I think Michael Spinks is too slow and easy to counter
Gerald McClellan I don't think could deal with both Roy's speed and power as a pro, but he would be number 3.
Ezzard Charles: I don't think he would be able to cope with Roy's speed being significantly faster than his own.
Billy Conn: Once again, a great fighter but I think Roy out thinks him, and is just too fast for him to adapt to.

But of all the fighters Roy could have foughtne in his prime or before he went to HW (McClellan, Toneyx2, Hopkinsx2, Nunn, C. Collins, Benn, Eubanks, Calzaghe) I think Benn and Chris Collins are the easiest opponents by far for Jones.

    I agree 100%...

Out of curiosity...I would like the detractors to name guys that they feel would have beaten Roy at 168...His true prime...

Not given a good fight but beat him......

Every fighter is beatable no matter who they are....Just have not seen the man able to do it..

I'll bite .Simply put,I think Nigel Benn had a realistic chance of defeating Jones. Can I say he "would" have beaten him,No.But in fairness I equally can not say Jones "would" have beaten Benn. After what Benn prevailed through in that tragic but stunning McClellan battle,I was hard pressed to make Jones a lock for a win and if their was a fight to be made, that was the ONE.McClellan was a huge favorite, many picked him to steamroll Benn.....for a moment lets put aside all of the excuses,Rabbit punching,Long count, etc.I am always hesitant to trump that fight up,talk fondly of the win.You just can not,It was a horrible ending, but the fight did happen, and Benn emerged the victor.

On paper,It appeared a whitewash for Roy.He was faster, deeper in pedigree, emence balance and instinct, really exploited a mans mistakes in embarrassing fashion. If we are talking strictly 168 as mentioned,he faced some guys in Thorton,Pazienza,Brannon etc. who brought forward pressure but NEVER the unbridled two fisted threat and intensity of Benn in that division.Benn could make it rough in there in a way Jones never had to deal with and would keep jones guessing. And I do think that as hard as Jones was to catch clean...I feel that Benn had the arsenal/power to hurt Jones badly.Call it the proverbial "punchers chance" but I think it was more than that & I honestly think Benn had an honest shot, I don't think Jones would be able to get in Benns head ,Ok commence laughter,Im done.

I see the fight as Benn getting starched out early. Jones would have timed him and pummeled him out.
