It's possible that he has slowed down due to his weight lifting and increase in weight. However, if mayweather engages him, he will have to rely on his counterpunching style and power. Speed will be of little factor if Mayweather goes all out. If JMM can TKO casa, he also has the chance to seriously hurt Mayweather.

Knowing Mayweather however, Marquez will really have a problem if he doesn't have the speed to catch the pretty boy.

And we will have a "boring" fight again. Hope Mayweather gives us a good fight by fighting all the way. PBF should brawl Marquez if he wants to impress the ordinary and casual boxing fans.

Personally, I don't want any technical lessons in this fight.

Marquez is an incredibly intelligent fighter...and Nacho, despite his tendency to make idiotic decisions on the business side, is a very intelligent trainer. They both know that power alone will not be enough to beat Mayweather. Nacho also got a first hand look at what incorrect preparation costs a fighter: Oscar's bizarre weight issue in the Pac fight. So i am not buying this whole "Marquez doesn't have speed" story. That being said...i still can't see Marquez winning. I think this has the POTENTIAL to be a very good fight...Marquez is as skilled a fighter as there is and Floyd has been inactive. But Floyd has as much, if not more, skill than Marquez...and is Floyd is just too fast and slick. Marquez, despite his recent tendency to be more offensive, is a natural counter puncher. Sure, he had great success against a very fast fighter in Pac. But Pac suited his style very well. Pac loves to jump forward...which lends itself very well for an accurate counter puncher like Marquez. But Floyd is also a counter puncher...maybe the best in the sport. He isn't going to jump in and exchange. He will dance and be slick all night. I see Floyd winning on points.

Why the hell JMM needs weight lifting Pac already made an example on how to be successful at higher weights. Pac does it by just train your ass. No weight lifting, Just train hard & eat good stuff.

    Weird...

One thing: weightlifting doesn't make you slow if you do it properly. The question is: is JMM doing it properly?

Maybe lifting rocks has turned out to be a bad choice

Yeah, I would hope so. But Nacho just doesnt come across as the type of guy to go out of his way to play mind games either. I do think that Marquez will be a lot slower because of the weight, no matter how he put it on. I dint think his frame will carry 147 that well. Im hoping he comes in around 143.
He's come in more than that in a lightweight fight, I think he will weigh more than that for Mayweather. Honestly it doesn't make sense for weight lifting unless done to the extreme to really slow down handspeed, it builds those quick switch fibers. People's workrate usually drops, and they are more hesistant to let their hands go, but we've seen Manny, Roy Jones, Hopkins, Duran, leonard, Hearns, Mayweather retain great handspeed while going way up in weight.

The poster boy of weightlifting lowering handspeed is Mosley, but I felt his handspeed didn't deminish as much as he started loading up on punches, and stoped throwing combinations of his own accord. IMO it was his mind set not the muscle that slowed him down.

Also whats with the Oscar weight issue thing? IN terms of making weight it looked like it would be really easy for him. If anything the problems came from him being too low in weight for too long. He lost too much muscle trying to stay around 150 which allegedly he had been doing long before the fight took place.

Finally, someone speaking sense. Explosive weight training, if done right, would not decrease the speed of a fighter. In fact, it could make him faster. That old myth that resistance training stiffens the body and loses flexibility is so out-dated it's unbelievable. Bigger muscles are as flexible as smaller ones and if he combines heavy lifting (incorporating fast twitch muscle fibres), with plyometrics, he could actually improve his hand and foot speed as well as his conditioning.

If you want to talk about speed, look at olympic sprinters - built for speed (okay, not hand speed).

Not exactly a stranger to the weights room, is he?

So, either Beristain is so old school he doesn't have a clue, or it's all mind games.

What an idiotic comment from an obvious nuthugger. Pac and JMM have no resemblance in body type. Pac has the frame to carry more weight from his larger/ more muscular lower body.

    Pacdbest,

I hope you refrain from constantly mentioning Pac in threads where he is not supposed to be mentioned. You're making all the people here hate pacfans. Please stop with the senseless nuthugging.

You may not know it, there are many pac nuthuggers here and you don't need to tell us how great pac is. We already know that.

    perfect timing kills speed.

"The Nacho Way" as I like to call it is all about timing and precise punching.

To be quite honest all this speed and muscle and defense and offense things are not on my mind. The 2 more important questions for me are:

    1. Does JMM have the strenght/power to either hurt or cause PBF damage.

    2. Will JMM be able to fight 12 rounds at this weight.

The last thing you want, is that your boxer loses faith in his abilities. Such comment is the perfect bomb to make your boy to wonder and to lose focus... Nacho is an elite coach, one of the best in the business, he would never do something that could make his boy (especially JMM) to lose confidence.

I call the bullshit on that.

I would agree with you on the 'Speed vs Timing' thing but Floyd also has phenomenal timing and reflexes to boot. So Marquez is gonna have to retain his own speed and hope that Mayweather is rusty.

Speed, Strength, Defence, Accuracy, Power... All these things are stacked in Mayweathers favour.

The one thing that really matters for me is Marquez' game plan and his willingness to execute it.... Regardless of all his deficiencies.

you really cant compare a olympic sprinters muscles to a boxer. a boxer needs stamina sprinters has very little. marathon runner maybe and we all know how a marathon runners physique is.

you can gain weight by just eating a lot and get fat or eat and build up muscles. a boxers speed might be affected a little since you gained more weight.

Marquez does look unnaturally buffed up. I have always worried about how he might carry the weight as he is old and not growing into it naturally like Manny is. Marquez looks a bit weird being so stocky.

It would be strange for a boxers trainer to so openly belittle his own fighter, so I think it's a bluff. I hope Marquez pulls off a shocker of a win, but I'm nervous for him because I always thought it was a peculiar fight to make.
