We only don't know if he could 'go long' in a fight, becuase he never had to. The only time he did it wasn't fatigue that stopped him.
I didn't make myself clear enough. The only time he was in a long fight his skull, neck muscles etc were unable to prevent his brain from being nearly fatally damaged. That's what I mean by physical constitution. He was like Meldrick Taylor in that his body just wasn't capable of dealing with being struck repeatedly without being permanently damaged.
Who knows? I suspect what happend was just one of those horrible freak accidents that sometimes happen.
