Why shouldn't English be the "official language"? The Italians, Germans, Polish, Czechs, French, Russians, learned it when they came to the states, they looked at learning English as something to be proud of? That said, we've gotten by over 230 years without having an official language so why start now?

The thing Conservatives don't like is a sudden distaste for assimilation and that happens in times where you get an abundance of immigrants coming into the country.
But this is a conservative member of the Bush the Lesser administration saying that one of the things that should be done to make Hispanic immigrants feel more welcome in America is to end having English as the official language of government and have Spanish too. ¿The Republicans are going to have to agree to stuff like this and an amnesty for current Undocumented-Americans so don't you think a big announcement by the GOP supporting Spanish as an official language of America would be a good start?
