I use to watch Pernell a lot and could never figure his style and why other fighters could not hit never mind beat him. He had great body work and conditioning but I was not a fan but admired his skills in beating Chavez, Buddy McGirt, Nelson and the british fighter Jacobs. The way he beat Vasquez at light middle was pure quality.

*im not sure the average fan knows just how animalistic Vasquez was when Pernel beat him... Vasquez was a VERY tuff fighter... would he beat the likes of canelo ,now..maybe... that's how good he was, and how good pernell was.
i'm the same as u, I would think"why can't he be hit. it'always pisses me off that I never got in the ring with Pernell... he'd wander into San Fernando Gym in San Antonio every now and again..no fan-fare... he'd be in town and would go to the gym. I remember hitting the bag once and saying.."that's pernell over there"..all alone shadow boxing... I wish I had been in shape and got I the ring with, just to see what his thing was. I was a jabbing futhafka with a viscious hook,,, Tony Ayala once called my hook "a work of art"...
Another time, i'm hitting the bag... and the guy behing me is Orlando Canizalez... I nod my head, a slight "whats up"motion and continue on my busness..I turn to the bag and there's Gabby...

I couldn't stand Whitaker either, not a bit. Likewise I came to respect him off the Chavez fight where I sat up straight and looked past his cocky clowny ways that were there and the Vasquez win was quality. Vazquez was a pure comer with whipping power and a very sharp left hand who never stopped chugging. He wasn't tremendous when facing a quality boxer, Davis could make a case for a win and Wright did well in between all those KDS and slips but Vaquez was no joke and if you got careless like Daniels, he could detonate you with a single shot!
Now would you agree with me when I say Floyd has done nothing more than what Pernell did a few years ago earlier?
For sure, but I do think Whitaker did it bigger and to me Vazquez was more of a fluid live and seasoned threat who showed different gears...hindsight being 20-20. Also none of that catchweight bullcrap. Whitaker had to get off the canvas and felt those body shots early but that was a masterclass display.
This is brilliant. Some consider Floyd and Whitaker boring and yet others just as interested consider them pugilistic masters.

I'll tell you whats boring. Spending 10 bucks on a cab in order to get to a bar to see Tyson/Seldon. Others at home would consider the 40 dollar ppv as money well spent. It matched the instant gratification of that 2 minute microwave Captain Highliner dish.

Sorry about that butchering of the last name Capitan.
