Domestic violence is not unheard of in this country and the worst thing a foreign person can do is try to be the hero. As much as it pains me I would walk away. I cannot solve their problems and me punching someone is only going to land me in prison or with a hefty blood money fine. He/she/they should know better and work out their own problems, I have my own relationship to try and deal with.

this is probably where being a woman comes in handy.

I've intervened on a couple of occasions. Never had to hit anyone. Usually the distraction of an extremely verbally aggressive woman takes them off guard. It's only after I do think I could have got in to a bit of trouble there.

I once lept out of a car at some traffic lights in the middle of manchester, ran in to a park to yell at some youth who was impressively dragging - and I do mean dragging a puppy. He stopped.

I think it is the correct thing to do and in the UK would do so, but not here. There have been stories of teachers getting involved after seeing a couple fighting and then when the teacher challenges the guy the woman starts to attack the teacher. And then if the police are called both gang up on the teacher. It doesn't pay to get involved in a different society where you are always looked at as the outsider. It's okay for me really with my permanent residency, but for an average teacher it will mean immediate deportation. For me it will mean a huge fine for damages and possible prison time. And all because a couple are being stupid and she gets a slap. Like I said to Ghost if it was really serious then of course I would help, but it would need to be pretty serious and violent. Not just a slap. In my experience women are more violent than men. I would never think to raise my hand to someone. Over emotional nutters.

Although my Mother brought me up to NEVER EVEN SO MUCH AS CAST A VIOLENT EYE (still don't quite get that one) She also told me NEVER get involved in other peoples domestic disputes. The woman will 9/10 turn on you.

If it was as aggresive as that then clearly I would try and help, but quarreling and a slap, I would rather not get involved. She/he should learn their lesson and get out of the relationship. It is not down to me to be a hero and find that I am the one being taken down for assault.
