Bute will have to be prepared to trade with Johnson though. I think this is an exciting fight, but Bute seriously has to start fighting some decent opposition now the super 6 is over. Johnson has just been beaten by Froch, hes an old fighter now, hes still a threat, but thats all he will be at this stage of his career. I think he should call it a day soon.
I don't disagree with this and as Bilbo says, Johnson consistently fights relatively competitive with the top guys, but he falls short. In losing, I thought he did well against Froch. I expect the same against Bute. Johnson is similar in style to Andrade and Bika in a way, right?
yes there is no doubt that he will compete, as expected against any fighter Glen is put in with. Hes as tough as the come and will give any fighter win or lose a tough 12 rounds. But he is getting older and the more he loses against the top tier fighters the more i dont want to see him fight them. There is no point, hes an old man with little to prove now. Everybody will remember Glen as a tough SOB, who always fell short in competative fights at the highest level. No doubt he has some memorable wins especially against good fighters especially Roy Jones, but at this later stage of his career I dont think he has 12 round of boxing in him at the highest level.

good luck to him though against Bute and i would love glen to win, but i just cant see it happening after his last performance against Carl. Hes facing someone whos a bit harder to hit and more slick. I dont think hes as durable as carl and maybe not as powerful, but hes a very good boxer and i think he beats Glen over 12 rounds.
I feel the same way about Johnson. The only reason I can see him staying active now is the payday, and so long as he is competitive and doesn't take a lot of damage, I can't fault him for staying in the game.

I wonder what tehy offered Johnson for this fight? He is surely still worth a million for such a venue as Quebec. He is basically saying "I know I have to knock you out in your hometown to win." But then again, Johnson doesn't have the speed to win a lot of rounds against Bute if that's the way he wants to roll with this fight. If Johnson gets that feeling Bute wants to box.. he is going to the body early and hard. If But thinks he can inflict more damage I see Johnson using the defensive shell and taking it to him late.

I have a feeling that with a guy like Glen Johnson who is constantly putting on preasure, Bute's uppercut may be the perfect weapon. Does anyone know who had the upperhand in sparring?

Good point.. But I think Johnson doesn't lean in like Carl Froch or L Andrade. He's extremely hard to hit flush because of the angles he gives (or doesn't give).

I'm sure there would have been talk about G Johnson putting it on Bute in sparring if that was the case. I do remember Bute touting Johnson for the extremely tough camp!

Johnson hasn't won a championship fight in a long time, he always gives a good effort but comes up just short on the judges scorecards. I don't expect Bute vs Johnson, if it happens, to be any different, Johnson looks good in some of the early rounds, then Bute takes over the last half of the fight. For what it's worth, i'd rather see Bute fight Froch, Kessler or Ward, but I hope Glen gets a good payday out of this and then retires.

THe only thing that makes me hesitant to agree with this is the Andrade fight. Johnson, even at 72 years old, is a much better fighter than Andrade. If he can handle Bute's power and a body-work, I could see him wearing Bute down and stopping him. However, Bute surely learned a ton from the first Andrade fight, so that's probably unlikely.

It's gonna be a great night of boxing. Kessler/Stieglitz opening up for Bute/Johnson on Showtime.
