Default Bute v Johnson appears done

    by Richard Cloutier

Jean Bédard of InterBox has announced that Lucian Bute (29-0-0) will defend his IBF super middleweight title against Glen Johnson (51-15-2) on November 5th. It is assumed that Bute-Johnson will be staged at the Bell Centre or at the Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec. Showtime will televise, likely paired with highlights of Mikkel Kessler's bout with WBO super middleweight champion Robert Stieglitz, which is scheduled to take place on the same day in Denmark.

Bute's team tried to secure Kessler and Kelly Pavlik for the date, but Kessler turned their offer down in favor of facing Stieglitz, and Pavlik rejected a guaranteed offer of $1.35 million dollars. Johnson was reportedly not happy with the money being offered. The two sides continued to negotiate and a deal was reached.

In his last battle, fought on June 4 in the Super 6 tournament, Johnson gave WBC champion Carl Froch all he could handle and lost by way of majority decision.

Probably the best fight available given that Johnson kept it interesting with Froch in his last outing, but outside of Kessler, Ward, or Froch at 168, there'st not much else out there for Bute.

Agreed. I'm just glad he is going to test himself instead of fighting another B level opponent as that was getting tiresome and hardly good prep for the winner of the S6.

Yea, I mean I'm not sure how much better Johnson is at 168 than Andrade or Bika, but I hear your point.

IMO Johnson is a much bigger threat than Kessler or Pavlik at this point.

He has the right type of style to trouble Bute.

Bute should win this on points IMO. He wont stop Johnson, so he has to prepare for a 12 round fight. Bute will win the fight like Froch did in the later rounds when he gets tired. Bute will have to be prepared to trade with Johnson though. I think this is an exciting fight, but Bute seriously has to start fighting some decent opposition now the super 6 is over. Johnson has just been beaten by Froch, hes an old fighter now, hes still a threat, but thats all he will be at this stage of his career. I think he should call it a day soon.
