Default I want to run a Marathon for this charity!!

Welcome to Retired Boxers Foundation, Inc.

How do I go about it?

I've googled a few Marathons and they all seem to already have charities in place. Can I not do one for a charity of my choosing and if so does anyone (in the UK) know how I'd go about it?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

for most marathons you can just pay to register yourselft and then you can raise money for whoever you want

sometimes if you are late registering all of the open places have gone and you have to run for an elected charity place

but get in early and you should be fine

a marathon is a long long way you know, ever done a distance run before?

Ok thanks for the Info pal.

I've never done anything like 26 miles mate no. The most I've done at one time is 11. I run 6 miles 5 times a week though. I know it will take a lot of training and dedication but I'm up for it and I think I can do it. I f I can't I am at least willing to give it a go.

If your already running that far that often mate you shouldnt have too much trouble

I would recommend prehaps doing 3 runs a week, maybe 1 six miler and a couple of longer ones, then on other days do some other fitness/cadio excersize, do a circuit or something

Your body gets use to running distances very quick and you should challenge your body in other ways to push your fitness up

Good luck tho man, ive done a few and im proud of it, not sone one for 5 years tho, might get on another soon

I train in the evenings on the days that I do the runs. (I get up at 3 am to run and train for an hour and half at night on boxing technique and weight lifting too) my biggest concern is I currently weigh 215lbs and I am very lean at that weight. I am told that my body will struggle to pump blood the same due to the amount of muscle after 10 miles. Should i try shifting some weight and stop lifting weights??

thats a lot of work mate you obviously have the dedication

you probably do need to change your routine a bit

as far as lifting goes i hear squatting helps but im not so sure about that

i think you could have a problem with your size, i reckon if you change your routine to work towards a marathon youd probly lose a bit of muscle anyway, i dont think too many people have run a mararthon and been so heavy

it doesnt matter if you do it in record time or anything tho, especially with your first

experience counts for a lot when running that type of distance, i ran my first in close to 4 hours and thats mainly coz i didnt know how to pace myself and when to take water and that sort of thing

Ive just run the robin hood nottingham full marathon in sept, very hard work but a great sense of achivement, i ran it 4 a charity of my own, so just register early and collect sponsership on your own, although the really popular ones ie london, edinbourgh etc are really hard to get places on 4your charties, if you train hard you'l be fine, you will hit walls over the 26miles but thats normal, dont worry too much about your weight, kilos will drop off when u start doin regular long runs, ran 4times a week a 10, maybe 2 fast 5 or 6 miles and then a big one (15-22mile) on sunday, obviously build up week by week on miles/distances, once my body got a hardened to long distance i dropped to 2 big runs a wk and lots of stomach/core+ lower back work ie sit ups and dead lifts/squats etc. This was very important as your lower back gets hammered during a marathon and tight stomach muscles holds your posture, dont run the full distance b4 as it takes too much out of your body, hit at 20-22 miles and the atmostphere on the day will carry u the last few miles (hopefully!) hope this helps!!
