Yeah the whole 8 belts in 8 weight classes is bullshit. You win titles at the weight limit..hence "welterweight title" or "Light middleweight title" - not by making a light middle fight where your opponent (punching bag) can only come in at 150.

You fight for belts at the weight - If you want a catch weight, no title should be on the line. Greedy alphabet organisations are just as much to blame.

Some catch weights make sense just to even the fight a bit like JCC and Whitaker, others are a joke and just unfair.

I agree that some special attraction fights need a catch weight - Just that no title should ever really be on the line if you're not letting your opponent come in at the limit.

Agreed but TV has an obsession with an alphabet title and some will not promote the fight otherwise.

Both these points make perfect sense.

Good point, I think that's what has to be the issue with catchweight fights. It's ridiculous to criticize a fighter for pursuing catchweights; all boxers are independent contractors free to set their own terms, at least in theory they should be At the same time though, it's equally loopy for a fighter to be a champion defending his title at a given weight yet not being allowed to weigh in even close to the limit. It's the fact that sanctioning bodies are so easily manipulated that makes some of these fights stink imo, but at the same time you can't really use any other sport in contrast, as individual athletes don't really have the same bargaining power.
It boils down to whether Manny or Hopkins or anyone else would actually care enough about winning the title to concede a few pounds to their opponent, and I suspect this is rarely the case anymore hence the Alphabet bodies just make it easy on themselves.
