Emmanuel Steward appreciation thread

In my mind I always saw Emanuel Steward go old and grey like Eddie Futch and that he would trainer hundreds of fighters and create a longstanding legacy. The way he talked about boxing was like he was from the Joe Louis era. Just seemed too quick and too soon.

I wonder how it will effect Wlads next performance?

It is indeed the end of an era, and in a way starting his own boxing career at the same Brewster community centre at which Joe Louis trained puts him firmly in that legacy of greats who fought or trained out of Motor City, along with Eddie Futch and his fighters too.

Sad thing is that I live near Detroit and it really has not been getting alot of press. His sister has already started taking stuff out of the gym for fear of vandals and a dozen or so boxers will have to relocate. It truly is the end of an era and the only thing that keeps getting press is the stupid world series. The Detroit of today seems to not appreciate the sport of boxing or the legends it has produced. R.I.P Emmanuel Steward and the Kronk gym legacy.

He died on Thursday but I only found out on Saturday. It's strange really I get the boxing monthly magazine and there was piece on him on that issue with no mention of him having colon cancer. Sad,sad loss. Wish him all the best and his family

Wow... that IS sad. Times have certainly changed, when an ATG in boxing such as Emmanuel passes away and Detroit of all places hardly notices. Sad about the gym, too. It definitely is a sign of the times. Well... as it turns out, Detroit won't have to worry about the World Series too much longer, either. They're about to be swept.

I think Manny put a lot of money to keep the Kronk gym open but I think it closed down ages ago?

R.I.P Emmanuel - Seemed like a legitimately nice guy who loved the sport and his remarkable stable of fighters showed how good he was at this game. Sad news.

I think Manny put a lot of money to keep the Kronk gym open but I think it closed down ages ago?

@Master - the old Kronk Gym opened and closed a bunch of times, but then closed for good in 2006.

In April 2011 the abandoned Kronk Gym in Detroit may see new life under a proposal to renovate the battered two-story building and revive the area around it.
