Define a "dangerous dog". A dog is not inherently dangerous, just because of its breed or even size.

In actual fact, the most aggressive dogs are the smallest ones. A Jack Russell or terrier type will bite ankles daily and nothing is done.

It's not the dogs at fault, it's the owners.

What happened recently was a terrible tragedy. But that shouldn't mean a cull of all dogs that won't fit in a hand bag.

There is a big difference between being bit on the ankles by a Jack Russell and having a 12 stone Pit Bull launch itself at you. There is a lot of propaganda on both sides but the facts are not so easy to dismiss. Pitbulls and Staffordshire Bull Terriers are bred from Bulldogs for strength and terriers for gameness. They are working dogs that started life fighting bears and bulls before being bred to fight each other. Staffies seem to get a bad press often because owners are calling what is in fact a pitbull or crossed pitbull a staffie to prevent being prosecuted.

When studies conclude that 94% of attacks on children by Pitbulls are unprovoked compared to 42% in other breeds you can't pretend that breed has nothing to do with it. The fact is that there is a much higher risk of death when attacked by a dog descended from fighting stock than that of other breeds. Why take that risk when you have kids? Staffies are a lot more distantly related than pitbulls from the original fighting stock and like pitbulls are very loyal without being potentially dangerous but that danger is still there. It is also true that a lot of criminal irresponsible aggressive dipshits are attracted to the idea of owning such a breed and like any other dog they need care and training something those types of idiot are unlikely to give. It then makes it seem like even responsible owners are looking after a potential time bomb.

There is such a thing as a dangerous dog, and ironically owning one when you have kids is unlikely to protect them, because they often like people, and are not ideal to be trained as attack or guard dogs. They are descended from fighting dogs though, and their unpredictability and propensity and inbred ability to inflict major damage and even kill does expose anyone in their vicinity to more danger. Most dangerous dog attacks are suffered by friends or members of the owners family,not strangers.

It all depends on the owner 99% of the time. You treat your dog with care give it a good life and you'll have a loving, friendly dog you need not worry about. You give your dog a shitty life and make it aggressive then your more to blame than the poor dog if something does happen.

Lots of people should be allowed to have dog's that's something that needs to be dealt with not 'dangerous dogs'.

You have a good point. I remember having a paper round when I was younger where there was a little terrier which always tried to bite me through the letterbox and it often ripped up the newspapers. It was as it it was always waiting for me haha :P
