Is Golovkin the Real Deal ?

Kid Chocolate. I don't really understand the hype around him yet. I liked his win against N'Jikam, but even in that fight, he was outboxed for a large part of the fight, N'Jikam's chin just couldn't hold up. Every round that N'Jikam didn't hit the mat, he won. It's still a solid win, but at the same time, I don't really think he has shown that he would mop the floor with Sergio Martinez. I understand the hype around Golovkin because he is utterly destroying guys on his way up, although even with him, he didn't look absolutely destructive against an old Ouma.

I dunno bud, if anyone is having a heavy dose of hype its Golovkin. Both warrant attention. I saw the N'Jikam win as impressive, six KD's are six KDs. Just as his destruction of Guerrero was last out. The same Guerrero who beat Rosado years ago. Golovkin was an established champion vs Rosado who was coming up in weight..and Rosado has been rocked and rolled before and after Golovkin who couldn't put him down. A 40 yr old Whitaker had him on queer street just prior. Love was very green in comparison and fights nothing like Golovkin. Rightfully so Rosado was his first major test and Rosado did as he should have done as a far more experienced guy. I don't see Quillin mopping the floor with Martinez, just as I'm not ready to say Golovkin beating up two jr middleweights brought in for showcases leads to him steamrolling even an old Martinez.

I don't think we're too far apart. Remember though that Guerrero was coming up in weight as well. Also, Guerrero was knocked out by Grady Brewer in four rounds, one weight class below. In my opinion, Guerrero also lost against Ishe Smith, although that was a close fight. I'm pretty sure N'Jikam is the only true, solid middleweight that Quillin has beat, and just for the record, N'Jikam avoided Golovkin like the plague when he had the belt that Quillin now has. Also, Kid Chocolate two most recent wins have come against guys with suspect chins. He's matched relatively carefully.

Golovkin has torn through guys. Not only knocking them down, but providing highlight reel knockouts. That tends to attract people, but as you said, it can also have people overrate him. The other thing is a lot of people won't face Golovkin. Sturm, Quillin, N'Jikam etc. In fact, Macklin is the first true middleweight to actually sign up to get in the ring with him. No one is running from Quillin in the same manner. I'll also add that Golovkin beat Proksa down. Now, I'm not saying Proksa is the second coming by any means, but he's not horrible. I probably rate N'Jikam and Proksa in the same tier. N'Jikam a smidge higher.

I agree with you though. Macklin is Golovkin's first real test at middleweight. If he steamrolls Macklin, the hype becomes more deserved.

How much do you want to bet that Quillin faces Rosado in Brooklyn in his next fight?

At the end of the day we're fans who want solid fights with improving fighters. I see this in both Quillin and Golovkin and look for them to face off. As far as I know Guerrero had fought his career at Middleweight though, it was the Grady fight he went down for. I just cannot justify saying Quillin has been matched 'carefully' and not say the same about Golovkin. Rosado had been hurt and dropped numerous times and Ishida was taylor made and sent in for Golovkin to look the destroyer. Tall gutsy kid with little pop whos idea of defense when hit hard is hitting his gloves together and waving a guy in. If N'Jikam is as you say a little higher than Proska and both we're dropped brutally numerous times and defeated I'd tend to say thats pretty even up as far as comp? I think we are indeed not far apart at all...we want quality scraps and see ability in both. I don't throw the overrated tag on Golovkin because of inability or weakness. Hes on a massive push but the overrated part comes in for me when I hear him being compared to Mike Tyson and Papa Chavez within 5 minutes on a premier network. Not to mention a guy of Martinez calibur basically being called a speedbump for him. Prospects just need perspective. Yeh man, can't wait for the Macklin fight. I think we'll see the best Golovkin yet off a short hurtful jab and body work. Going to be a solid mix up!
