Default Thug Life with Fernando Vargas

The former business manager of Fernando Vargas has testified that the former champion had ties
    to a notorious Oxnard-based gang.
Joe Pecora said he frequently paid off members of the Colonia Chiques in 2007 and 2008, at the request of Vargas. The payments were allegedly okayed by Vargas as "protection money" to continue ongoing criminal enterprises.
Pecora is on trial in Ventura County California Superior Court after being charged with grand theft for stealing more than $400,000 from the fighter by forging his signature on checks.
Pecora testified that he only stopped working for Vargas because he was disgusted with his constant philandering and hardcore partying.

Vargas was just taking care of the guys he grew up with. Nothing wrong with that

I have always been a fan of Vargas, he was super talented. They should make a film about this as a gangster movie.

well lets face it, Vargas was never too bright, the guy walks around looking like a whale when he has serious back problems, so this shouldn't be much of a shock, probably going broke and trying to make as much money with as little effort possible

I never liked Vargas....ever ever. I even routed for my "favorite" Felix when he fought him. Something about him, I think it was his sort of little baby child delinquent look, and his arrogance esp. against Oscar, it really nauseated a lot of people in various mid-sized manufacturing cities along the Pacific Northwest between Seattle and Eureka, with the possible exception of the small towns which dot the at-times-opulent landscape often encountered when meandering on an off-the-beaten-track daytrip along the coastal highways there that run up and down the California coastline.

I was the opposite I supported Vargas against 2 of my other favourites ODH and Tito. Shame he lost both but he gave a warriors performance that he can be proud of.

Against Trinidad yes, but against ODH he only looked good cause he was juiced up, which only makes DLH's win more impressive and sorry just makes Vargas' short comings more obvious, I remember when he used to come into the ring with what looked like a duck face pose and Trinidad dropped it about half way, Oscar turned it into a whimper, 2 people only to blame for Vargas' demise, and that was his management and himself, didn't have even 25 fights when they were putting him in with guys like Campas (even if he was old he still had power), Quartey, Wright, and Trinidad. Tito was a step up too soon and it showed, especially to the mental damage taken in that loss, Vargas became a bit inactive and also his ego was too damn inflated going in against guys who had already proven themselves to be greats and again he paid for it

I'm not sure you can blame his management, we don't know that Vargas would've been any better off waiting to fight guys like that. His people certainly had every reason to believe he could beat Trinidad, and that was a hell of a fight, I wouldn't wish to undo it as a boxing fan. Maybe Vargas just peaked early, he was as skilled as he was going to be by a young age and had back problems etc so declined physically quite early.

IMO he wasn't mature enough MENTALLY to be in there and cope with that type of beating or fight, and that's why he deteriorated so badly afterwards

The boxing people guiding Vargas didn't do anything wrong. They led him to world titles and big money paydays. That is exactly what you are supposed to do with a talented fighter. Unfortunately, when you have a bunch of money, you need to invest it and that puts you into contact with people that make the characters in boxing pale in comparison...the real seedy characters are in the financial world, not the boxing gym. Vargas didn't sue his trainer or his manager, just his financial guy.
