He was a wonderful fighter and isn't it a shame. I recall a time when Ricardo was on the same bill as christy Martin. He was paid $50,000 she was further up the bill an paid considerably more. Which tells us that the world is fucking mad

Maybe if Ricardo had publicly beat some women, made online homophobic racist rant videos, came from a family of crack-addict jailbirds, and occasionally went to jail himself too, maybe he could've made more money, because clearly conducting himself with style and class and having an undefeated record of 52 wins and engaging in 26 World Title fights wasn't enough...

I think it would have helped if he didn't have the stature of a 7th grader. Not to diminish what the minimum weight guys do but come on, 104lbs? It's a lot harder for the general public to get excited about a guy who weights less than the average 14 year old girl, as opposed to a 200+ pound silverback like Mike Tyson, who gave the impression that if you looked at him funny he'd tear your arms off and beat you with them.

prince naseem hamed was one of the biggest draws in sports, and he was only 5′4".
Ricardo Lopez was taller than the Prince.

I think fighting at featherweight was the difference.

Prince was also a featherweight, hence me saying how I wished Lopez was 20lbs bigger, which would have put him in the featherweight class. And to be fair, Prince Naseem had a TON of star power charisma and style. Featherweight is small, but people will get behind a featherweight. Minimum weight is a bit too slight I think.

Carbajal did well and he had a great fight with Gonzales.

Salvador sanchez... the greatest Mexican fighter,IMO. Lopez was great,..his prob was he never had a super-fight. he nevr had that fight against another great fighter... had he fought "Chiquita"Gonzalez or Carbajal ... we'd prob know more or have a better gage of just how great he was.

I think also take into account i imagine his weight class did not have the most talent. I say that because the pool of fighters is not very large. I am not saying heavyweight is a large division either but what was said before being heavyweight champion is being the top dog in boxing you can beat everyone.

Heavyweights are overrated. There was a point in 94 ish where 3 of the top 5 p4p guys in the world didn't exceed 108 lbs. There have been countless great battles in that range and true talent stands out.

I'm not saying it's right, I'm just saying that's how people see it.

The heavyweight champ is, in theory, the guy who can whip ANY man in the world, regardless of weight. After all, weight classes were put in place to protect the smaller fighter.

So by that logic, the minimumweight champ is on the bottom of the food chain.

To be fair being the heavyweight champ is a real pain because at that size a punch fucking ends you. I don't think its overrated at all really i mean top guy in world of boxing is the heavyweight champ. I not saying the other weight classes aren't great but in real world the heavyweight champ top dog.

I think a lot of it at the time was Straws were brand new, it took Carbajal and Gonzalez nearing tearing each others heads off...and two multiple promotion working together (imagine that) to see the first million dollar payday in the neighborhood. Also American heavyweights were pretty deep. The Foreign factor in a non Internet era with guys was big. I love Lopez, but he and King missed the mark by not moving up when it was fluid and making noise.

I get the mindset for sure, how many times have we heard the heavyweights are the engine of the sport, but any fighter can end with one punch in a respected division. Happens every weekend minus a few cameras. I just don't think the mystic and draw of heavyweights holds true any longer. It's not a bash on them, it's a good expansion of the sport.
