Hitler, Mao and Stalin did not kill more people than religion itself "ever did", at least not directly. Hitler was raised catholic and condemned atheist movements by the Bolsheviks etc, it's debatable whether he was an atheist himself but that doesn't really matter. It has nothing to do with what he did or who he was, as goes for Stalin and Mao as well.

Hitler did not practice Catholicism. Many Catholic priests were killed in Concentration camps. One of Stalin's first moves was to attack the church both Catholic and Orthodoxy putting followers in reeducation camps. To this day, Many faiths in China practice in secrecy for fear of the government. Mao alone killed more than Hitler and Stalin put together. Most of what you call religious wars are actually land wars ie the war in Ireland and many middle eastern wars.
An atheist dictator killing Catholics isn't any different than Catholics killing Protestants, Sunnis killing Shiites, Hindus killing Sihks, yada yada. Stalin and Mao were awful people with an unprecedented capacity to kill, but they may not have been atheists without the writings of Karl Marx, who never killed anyone to my knowledge. Their personal beliefs had very little to do with what horrors they inflicted imo, there WERE no atheists not all that long ago, history is still rife with monsters.
