It's not so much an issue of the amout of punishment recieved, as it is someone being phsyically and mentally spent, and sent out to take more punishment.
Like I said before, I have absolutely no problem with Abdusalamov's corner not stopping the fight, even though he was taking a lot of flush bombs, because Abdusalamov was ALWAYS in the fight. He was pressing forward and throwing punches, and actively trying to win the fight.
From the 3rd round on (or maybe even earlier, I forget) it was evident that Tapia punched himself out and was gassed badly, so much so that he could no longer keep Kirkland at bay, and he was taking a plastering. If he still had the energy to fight on, I'd have no problem with his corner.
But his corner knew he was fucked and kept saying "I need you to get a second wind." Kirkland isn't going to give you a chance to get a second wind: he's going to club you to death.
When a man no longer has the will or the physical capabilities to fight on, the fight should be stopped.
Difference with Groves being of course that Groves was always in the fight. Even though he was hurt badly, he had the energy and will to fight on and win, so he should have been given a chance.
