I don't think there's any doubt that drugs "CAN" spark creativity in some artists, but I don't think it's a good trade off considering all the potential great art that hard drugs have snuffed out over the years.

I don't think it applies to Mr. Hoffman though. From what I read, he went to rehab for drug addiction in May 2013 after he fell off the wagon following 23 years of sobriety. So if that's accurate, all of Hoffman's great work was done without the use of hard narcotics (I don't lump alcohol and weed into the catagory of "hard narcotics").

Depends on what drug and the personalities you are in company of and the atmosphere situation at hand.
Herion has you laying back like you are in safe pink cloud more suited to cruising but you can get right into stuff on a very deep level,even chess.
Coke levels up and pinging out in your zone.
Gunja imaginative but can be suppressing and create anxiousness. Mixed with alcohol can create the reverse so long as its Gunja first, drink second;they dont work so well the other way around unless you like feeling sea sick.

It's a cause and effect thing as far as drugs lending to artistic endeavours, I tend to agree it's a bit silly to make a direct correlation, no matter how many names you can drop. Many great artists have the disposition, but are able to handle their demons and not become addicts. Many people are very talented and artistically inclined, but allow drugs to completely ruin their chances of doing anything. A lot of drug addicts have no real aptitude for anything creative. All of these brackets vastly outnumber the great artists who also kill themselves via drugs demographic, I suspect.
