Don't talk sh*t about Gamboa

Truth be told I think a lot of us saw Gamboa making those fatal mistakes that would get him Ko'd in this fight. As Spicoli, said.. in those previous fights we saw lesser fighters catch Gamboa in between punches and yank his head down out of the cloud.

That being said. I was a big fan of Gamboa, then saw the outside of the ring nonsense and his desire seemed to slip. He used to have this fantastic head movement quick hands and a slick knack of countering longer arms with short stubby hooks. The last few times out it seemed like he just wanted to bait, counter get a win however possible and the collect his check. I fully expected him to get KO'd tonight. In fact earlier, within 5 rounds. Then HOLY CRAP... He resurfaces in the first four rounds and more or less has his way with Crawford. I thought wow, maybe he just needed to get inspired. He really showed all that potential he had before...

Now the part that chafes my @$$ is the fact that he could of have won this fight. He couldn't really hurt crawford but he was doing enough that he was winning rounds and out classing crawford. Why he started going to balls to the wall and leaving him self wide open for counters against a guy like crawford, just puzzles me. The first counter shot that crawford landed was inching closer and closer to landing and you could see crawford betting the farm on that one, but gamboa didnt have to get that loose and start telegraphing punches in bunches. He was doing fine before that. They say never fall in love with fighters, they'll break your heart every time.

2 more observations:
- Crawfords a likable champ. He's not quite as amazing and the HBO announcers would have us believe, but hes solid, skillful and almost re-hydrated to junior middle from 135.

- Would it kill the lazy @$$ ref to get a damn towel from one of the corners and wipe down the freakin Tecate logo? A good fight affected on both sides by the water on the logo. The pattern of droplets remained the same between many of the rounds.

Seems like a crazy observation, he took some of Gamboas shots flush without budging. If he stays at lightweight he cleans out but should go the light welter and go for Garcia. That's a very winnable fight for him. Also think he'd beat Algieri very easily so that would be a handy title.

yea but surely even if you dont like a guys style etc you can still recognize how good he is? I think hes a complete boxer, good speed, decent power, good skills, can fight ortho and southpaw. He might struggle against bigger fighters when he moves up but he is a very good world champion.

It always amazes me how we still hold on to what was supposed to be even after a 'name' gets sparked out. Its been mentioned numerous times and almost sounds an excuse...but Gamboa decided fights ago he was done at 130 when he blew the weight in that farce vs Solis and walked away from his trinket rather than meeting a contract.

Crawford is as low key as they come but he shows everything you can hope and ask for in a young champion. Solid boxing skill, coming in the under dog and showing to be a switch hitter and making rbr adjustments and coming back from adversity and finishing a dangerous fighter. He travels regardless of 'hype' and earns trinket in another country. Not to mention carrying a following of hometown and putting fans in the seats where you hardly if ever here boxing mentioned. He is stubborn though and really I think he made it harder than it needed to be slugging at times with Gamboa. Lampley went a little bat shit crazy with the 'great' title but HBO is all about pushing product and hopefuls. Sometimes they prove not ready for primetime and turn in a lukewarm showing ala Gamboa vs Jiminez on HBO and promptly return to FNF, and sometimes they make a devastating showing like last night.

it depends where you think that people are rating crawford. i would agree that he isnt going to be the next great thing in boxing, but this fight did show me that he is a true champion. he is undoubtably the best at 135. i also think that he will have success once he moves up to. im not expecting him to become a top 5 p4p or anything, but he could definitely crack the top 10 in time.

and gamboa is still a good fighter. he isnt a push over by any means. it was a good win.

I think this notion Gamboa has a bad chin is foolish. He has bad technique. If he tucked his chin we'd see him as a fighter with a very good chin because these KDs wouldn't happen.

Same its an accumulative effect because he gets caught a lot out of step and out of position. If anything, he showed and has shown remarkable punch resistance. I remember when people used to say the same thing about Tito and that was also a head scratcher. Knockdowns are often said to be signs of having a bad chin and yet in many cases it has nothing to do with chin. Lewis also while he stood there and took bombs by the biggest puncher in the sport. Somehow the knockouts by Oliver and Rahman equated to a bad chin when both shots would have most likely ko'd Chuvalo and quite possibly a large four legged animal.

Gamboa does a lot of things that look good until he gets caught up throwing those stupid fucking flurries. If he sat down and threw less but more meaningful punches and smothered instead of just standing there wailing away he probably wouldn't find himself on his ass so much. I don't know maybe that's just damage from the amateurs.

I agree, but he seems to just throw the gameplan out the window at the first sign of trouble, then he turns into a amateur. Blocks punches with his face and close eyes and swing. Just not a smart fighter
