Cotto has used the middleweight strap as a bargaining position to secure a good payday against Canelo. Remember Canelo was arguing for a larger slice of the pie but Cotto holding a belt stops that card being used by Alvarez.

GGG has carried on earning and beating true middleweights so his career has not stalled. Cotto is making the most amount of money he can before he leaves the game. In this aspect he has not done anything out of the ordinary to maximise his income.

What he has done that's out of the ordinary is act like a pussy by hiding behind a belt that he had no intention of defending. Other people may have done this in the past but one of the reasons Cotto has garnered such deep respect was because he didn't play these kinds of games. It's a shame he felt he needed to twist the rules and lose the respect of fans.

I agree with the negativity. Cotto has gone way down in my estimation with his calculation above WW. He deserves no creditvfor draining a MW when he isnt even going to pretend to fight at the weight. First picking on a cripple, then draining a MW to a corpse and completely avoiding the main man to fight Canelo tin can man can Alvarez. Lame ending to a career IMO. Cashing out like a pimp.

Far more Mexican/Mexican-American boxing fans in America than Puerto Ricans. Alvarez brings more money to this fight than Cotto does and the Mexico-Puerto Rico thing makes it a massive fight anyway regardless of whether there's a belt on offer. And considering that the beltholder after this fight either has to fight or publicly duck Golovkin you can make a good case that neither of these guys want to have anything to do with the belt when they do fight.

Other than have the kudos that they hold the current middleweight title and all the money that brings with it. Conceivably the money this fight could generate could mean a return and trilogy if they are as good as they appear.
