I agree they should fight GGG at 160, no less. But I wouldn't blame Cotto for relinquishing the MW title which technically is not really a MW title at all, because Cotto has absolutely no business at 160. Canelo, on the other hand, belongs at 160 and will eventually be bigger than that. Shades of Chavez Jr. For Canelo not to fight GGG would be exponentially worse than for Cotto not to fight GGG.

Here's more moonwalking by Canelo:
Canelo: When I Decide To Go 160, I'll Face The Best - Boxing News
Pleeeease.
That, and $3 will buy me a caffe latte at Starbucks.

Neither of them are going to fight Golovkin. Golovkin should call their bluff after they fight and offer to go to 155 to make the fight with the winner. Whoever it is that wins will still bottle it.

Fuck it, that's what I'd do. I'd wait till Kellerman asks them and they make the 155 excuse then get in the ring and challenge the fuckers on live TV to fight at 155.

Canelo has a shot at the middleweight crown and should he win it, the best man in the division is being dictated to point his weight south to 160. Roy Jones went up to get his. Micheal Spinks went up to get his shot and history was made. Neither asked the champ to come down. If you want to be the king of the hill you shouldn't be allowed to try to make him take the elevator down. If a man has been at a certain weight and he is asked to come down, it hurts and advantage serf on the bottom of the hill. Henry Armstrong fought at three levels and as a champ defending three titles at three weights never asked anyone to come down. Sugar Ray Robinson never asked Joe Maxim to come down. Emile Griffith didn't ask Dick Tiger and so on. If you are climbing then you have the burden of truth. I used to admire Canelo but this cry baby stuff has got to stop. It is like walking into a BMW dealership and trying to get the latest model at a Yugo manufactured suggested price. I love boxing and when I was growing up there were not so many junior divisions either.

And again the sad irony to this now full on charade is that neither one of these guys (Cotto and Alvarez) or boxing needed to have the now fraudulent title involved. These two make a super fight and the same money or more given what the sanctioning fees are w/o the damn thing and words like mockery of a division would not even be part of this conversation. Now they both sound like fools in the press by openly holding the damn thin hostage. Its pathetic.

How has Cotto ducked GGG twice? Serious question. Forget these technicalities. I've always been upfront about saying Cotto has no business in the MW division... none. Cotto is too small for 160 pounds. Canelo isn't. He's bigger.... he's younger. How is Cotto's dodging of GGG equal to Canelo's dodging of GGG? Why does Canelo get to lump himself in with Cotto in saying they're both too small for 160? Sounds like Canelo deserves the bigger portion of the "sh*t pie" here. My opinion.

He actually has. When Rubio became "interim" champion that made him mandatory for Cotto or actually Martinez at that time. Rubio decided not to execute his right (most likely paid a little cash) and stepped aside to let Cotto challenge Martinez. Rubio was going to get the next shot but a few months later he fought the Kazak failed to make weight and was crushed. The Kazak then became the mandatory. The Wbc then decided to go along with an optional as long as it happened in the spring of 2015 and that the winner fights the Kazak 3 months later. Cotto did not fight in the spring and then got away with fighting Geale in June after being off an entire year. Then he was ordered to fight Golovkin again and once again the Wbc at their bequest allowed Cotto to once again skip fighting him in order to set up a fight with their native son. Step aside money once again changing hands one way or the other. They allowed this by both men stating and signing to fight him after their match is completed. Both men after all is said and done have now made it perfectly clear that they have no intention on fighting the guy because they are not middleweights. So should Cotto win he would then be on course to duck him 3 times. I dont just blame the fighters either. The wbc is up to their neck in this bullshit and they as an org have ducked their own interim champion.
Broken record or not they should have left the freakin title out of the proceedings and based on the testimony of the people who signed their names to honour the fight it should now be declared vacant.

Cotto vs GGG would never be a fair fight, and every true boxing fan knows it. Cotto started at 140, and his body frame is barely suited for 154, let alone 160. If GGG went down to 155, everyone would scream and yell that he was being drained. Fortunately, GGG seems to smart for that, so someone like Canelo won't be able to (I think) force him down there. Then we have Canelo, who wants everyone to think he's the same size as Cotto, when he's actually closer to Chavez Jr., who by the way is comically criticizing Cotto over catchweights. Canelo is obviously and clearly a full MW, and built to fight GGG right now. But he won't. Why? 'Cause he's already said he won't. Give Cotto all the grief you want for being a diva and forcing this 155-pound catchweight business.... but ducking GGG is strictly Canelo's department.

You can stick your fingers in your ears but it doesn't change the facts. Cotto has ducked Golovkin.
At the end of the day, if Cotto feels he's not a MW , fine, give up your title.
You've proved your point, history will say you've won a title at that weight, but if you have no desire to defend it at 160, it's a piss take to every fighter in that division and to the governing body.
Array
But you could say that about hundreds of fights throughout history and lets get real here, nobody has ever played this kind of game with the title he won from Martinez which was more then just the WBC.
I said on this very forum as a Cotto fan that he should have retired right after Martinez because he is not a middleweight. He didn't. He instead chose to defend fraudulently a title he himself suggests he has no business defending and making a mockery of the sport, the division and the Ring title. And Alvarez is a product.
The Kazak is no big middleweight. He was 170 on fight night. Roach also says he knows how to beat him. Bottom line is this for the third time in this thread. The lineal, Ring and Wbc middleweight title of the world has no freakin business being involved with this fight PERIOD! It makes little difference to me who takes that personally because the fiasco happens to involve someones favourite fighter. It involves one of mine also namely Cotto. Its still a joke and a piss stain on boxing. This is right up there with what Leonard pulled against Lalonde on the bullshit scale.
We all know Canelo is easily a MW, but if he's that desperate to avoid GGG that he boils down to 154 , that's up to him. My problem is that he doesn't , he goes to 155 and shit like that.
If he was honest and said "I'm going up to MW, and I want to beat everyone, but I won't be ready for GGG first fight out, it'll take time", again fine. The Cotto fight is a good fight on its own merit, it doesn't need a title attached to it and shouldn't have one (unless it's the 154 strap).
