Says something about TR how many fighters are willing to just not fight until their contracts run out. Mikey isn't the first and won't be the last. I mean Manny was taking loans of his own money and then paying TR interest FFS.
To be fair Manny was taking advances on future purses because he was broke. Arum guided Mikey to a world title and million dollar paydays. I don't think Top Rank would have done an appreciably worse job of managing his career or paying him than any other promoter would have. And with the amount of time out of the ring and lost momentum there's no way Mikey will have done better at the end of his career than if he'd just completed his contract and then gone elsewhere.

I really think it's some kind of mental thing with Mikey. I don't think he was being underpaid or treated unfairly by Arum. I just think there's some kind of mental flaw which will show up again somehow eventually. Sitting out that amount of time is nuts. No manager or lawyer would recommend it.

It'll be interesting to see how Mikey does compared to Valdez Junior if that guy stays at TR and they're both successful in the future.
Manny was taking loans on future earnings instead of rightfully being paid his back end. There's a reason Manny was so concerned with his guarantees, it was all he would get.

I agree taking time off in your prime is a terrible idea but we really don't know what Garcia was taking home. Those million dollar pay checks could have been only hundreds of thousands after a litany of BS expenses are deducted.
