Rooney was a good footballer when he was younger (not a great one, and not one who would have walked into many top international teams). He made lots of mistakes along the way, but he had matured into a quite a selflesss team player and he seems to be reacting to his ageing quite gracefully.
Still, he was just another hugely overrated player playing in the worlds most overrated club and international teams.
Rooney really was great for a few months around euro 2004 time, he was hugely impressive in that tourney, then he goes and scores a hat trick after being out injured for months with his broken foot on his debut for man united, in the champions league too.. amazing. He never really improved from that though. I don't think he has been overrated, well except in his teenage days but to be fair he was playing up to the hype back then, he has had a pretty great career, top scorer for england he could end up being man uniteds all time top scorer too, scored in a champions league final too, I guess his performances for england in major tournaments have been a disappointment since 2004 though, although he was lacking fitness in 2006 due to an injury before the world cup and england have been pretty poor since 2004 so it's not all rooneys fault.
That was his peak just as Owen's was 98 up to 01ish where he scored those goals against Arsnela in the FA cup final.
