I was a big Junior Jones fan and was shocked when he lost to John Michael Johnson. That fight for me was eerily similar to watching Kevin Kelley lose to Alejandro Gonzalez- I thought both were shoe ins/locks for top p4p fighters. There were so many talented and exciting guys at those lower weights in those days- Tom Boom Boom Johnson, Kevin Kelley, Kennedy McKinney, Mark Too Sharp Johnson, Freddie Norwood, MAB, Morales, Naz…etc. I didn’t relish or appreciate the 90s enough- I was spoiled and took the talent for granted.
Poison and McKinney were so similar- long, lean guys with HUGE rights and greet boxing skills. I feel like Junior Jones may have suffered from anxiety though, as you could tell he was in excellent shape and had trained hard but would gas in tough fights (Morales, McKinney, and Johnson as examples). He had Barrera’s number though- after he realized his right could land and do damage the stress came off and he fought really well. I miss those days…
Do not let success go to your head and do not let failure get to your heart.
