I've always been afraid of a straight eyeball hit. Never happened yet before, though.
Ear hits kind of hurt, and temple hits give me headaches. It's all fun, though, of course.

I got a good hit to my eye back when I was in highschool. I couldn't see out of that eye for a couple minutes, eye was as red can be. No problems down the stretch, just goes to show that you gotta keep your guard up at all times even for sucker punches.

My least favorite shots are to the kidney's, and the ears. I'm not talking about swallen ears as I am about the feeling you would get if you were to clap yourself hard on the ear. A good shot will ring throughout your ear, a perfect ear shot will take away your balance.

I've had a minor cut before, no broken noses. I've had my knuckle swallen up but that went away within a week and a half.

Best mentality is a defense one as long as it doesn't become a defense complex.
If you hear a voice within you saying that I am not a painter, then by all means paint and that voice will be silenced.

I lived in Japan for a while and in the gym I trained in there people didn't bother with amateur fights - just went straight to pro.

It was pretty dangerous since Japanese Refs don't stop bouts for the sake of fighter safety - it's not honourable or something.

Two of the guys got retina damage in their first fights and one guy got put in a coma from bleeding in his brain in his first fight. He asked his coach if he could go back in to fight again but wasn't allowed.

I don't know if this tendency is due only to being put into pro competition without the proper training though coz they also dieted too much. One guy I met who was a past member at that gym was put in hospital and nearly died trying to reach a weight class that was too light for him.

There are a few more skeletal small male boxers there than in Australia that's for sure.

I have had a few dodgy gyms in my time and it's not easy to tell as a beginner whether your gym is good or bad.

However, I am finding asking lots of Q's in forums like this might be a good way to check your coaches training philosophies against a large number of other coaches and fighters who have enough experience to make a fair assessment.

I don't think the rate of severe injuries in boxing needs to be a high as it seemed to be in Japan!

cuts are the big fuck all when sparring.. the worst thing is to get cut a few weeks before your match . same goes for bruised ribs. I went into a huge match once with torn cartilage on the ribs from a previous sparring injury .. thought I would be fine .. I was fine for a few of the early rounds winning those rounds , then I got hit real good in the ribs. that was it, I was not able to really throw any meaningful punches thereafter and thus lost via a decision .. I never made a big deal about it, like so many fighters do, so many fighter get injured and run right to the press,, fucking snatch boxes the lot ! nothing worse then someone saying I broke this I broke that . Let the winner of the match enjoy his win, go home and mend up if need be,, in silence !

A guy from my gym broke his hand before the Australian National Championships. He went to compete anyway and won the Australian Light Heavyweight title by winning three bouts over 4 nights - but not without pain.

I went there to compete also (didn't get a national title though) and saw the way he dealt with it. He was made captain of the state team for good reason - he dealt with it so well, he was so focused and supportive towards all the fighters.

However the national title was his main long term boxing goal so for him that was worth the risk of further damaging his hand.

I guess if you are planning a lot of bouts in the future you would not want to push yourself like that. It would not be worth the longer term set back to win one competition.

Perhaps that's one big thing to consider in boxing competitions - where your long term goals and priorities lie and what you are willing to risk as an individual. A few years ago I would take a fight regardless of whether or not I felt fit and ready and confident because I worried i would not get another chance.

Now I'd never go into a fight without feeling 100 % ready because I want to make the most of the next 6 years competing and hopefully continue to box for fun long after that. A coach who pushes you to compete when you're not ready might be more likely to be a bit dodgy i think!

thanks mate ! , The thing about all the injury stuff complaining and all, I can count on one hand the times I felt 100% going into a match.. there is usually always an ache or pain somewhere on the body, hands, back, knee, ankle, toe, shoulder.. its just part of boxing. I never say anything about an injury If I win , same should be true in defeat. every time I hear someone talking about their injuries after a loss I cringe.. I am thinking to myself " what ? you don't think I hurt?" shit ! truth be told every punch hurts , don't matter if it hits you on the arm, shoulder , chest, hip or chin, your going to feel it, its what you do , how you conduct yourself after you get hit, that determines what kind fighter you are. what you made of. and how you conduct yourself after winning or losing a match , as to what kinda person you are.

Even in training I'll try and keep it quite... only mention it to my coach unless people are getting the impression I am training like shite thru laziness...

Never go and on about it though... bad atmosphere in the gym... all of a sudden everybody has something wrong with them...

I was hit directly in the eye once while backyard boxing (yeah yeah....tsk tsk I know). It knocked me on my ass and I couldn't see well in that eye for about a minute. Vision quickly recovered. I had a bad headache the next day, and a black eyelid (not eye, eyeLID....it was the most f'd up thing I've ever seen) for about a week and half. No problems whatsoever besides that.
Boxing is like a handjob, and MMA is like a hot sweaty orgy with 5 chicks. I could never say no to a handjob, but which would you rather have?
