Boxing Sucks.

Boxing doesn't suck, it's just been forced out of the limelight by other sports and for good reasons too.

Other sports are more consistent in their entertainment value....with boxing you never know what you're going to get, a brawl, a bloodbath, a Svenn Ottke fight, a John Ruiz fight....a boring decision ....a controversial stoppage. Boxing has so many variables.

There is corruption in boxing and it's been there since the start and people don't like it....and there are 100s of titles, there should only be one per division!

Boxing is difficult to do and in this era of entitlement people don't like difficult they want something they can do without propper training or much competition, and so they invent sports.....the X-Games, MMA....it's the pussification of the world, the "We all deserve tropheys" crowd. Boxers EARN their money and respect and you can get one without the other, just ask Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Boxing when done correctly, is the one truth in sport...who is the best? who is the toughest? who is the strongest? who is the smartest? Those questions can only be answered in a 1 on 1 sport like boxing

The famous guys, the guys that get all the attention - Floyd, Hatton, Hopkins, Oscar etc..their purses are normally revealed and all earn more money than they could ever spend

Great post Donny, so many people crtisise boxers but half of them dont even know what it feels like to step into the ring and come face to face with someone who wants to KO your arse and to feel what it is like to be caught with a good clean hard punch.

A boxer is risking his life basically evertime he fights.
Ive got so much respect for anyone no matter what there ability if they step into the ring.

Unless boxing becomes completley free entertainment for me, I'll choose to critisize it like I do anything I spend my hard earned money on.

If I buy a DVD player and it's complete rubbish, I'll go back to the store and get my money back..

If I buy a PPV and it's a well paid boxer running and clinching for 12 rounds, I can't get my money back, so what else is there to do but complain?

But if I order a fight and it turns out to be, as you mentioned, a Ward - Gatti type of a fight, I compliment and celebrate them as well..

I see no problems with a "chcks and balances" system from the fans...

i THINK the minumum in britain is 50 quid a round. so 200 a fight in a 4 rounder if u make it that far, peanuts considering u fight once a month max really as a low end pro

we as fans do not have to be qualified to have an opinion

Take Mayweather... he gets an obscene amount of money for what he does and rightly so he is top of the tree.

but their are domestic fighters fighting on small bill every week taking bigger risks than he does ((espacially if their the underdogs)) for a pittence.

So for me if these top level guys take easy options and milk the fans they deserve every bad comment given from the armchair critics

Exactly, I've never in my life run for office or held office but I have no problem criticizing politicians. Do politicians know more about being politicians, sure, but that doesn't mean there exempt from criticism from those that aren't politicians. Besides it would suck if you could only criticize people who do the same thing as you and you were like a garbage man or something.

Donny you bring up some good points, and I totally agree with your notion that boxing fans should give boxing a try. It definatly would give them a new respect for boxers. I remember being a cocky 19 year old walking into the gym, confident that I would be great because I was big and watched a lot of boxing, and being totally shocked at how much just a JAB or a body shot hurt.

HOWEVER, I don't agree with the notion that boxers are not open for criticism from the average man. What it all comes down to in sports is that the athletes get judged based on their peer group, not compared to the average Joe. For example, if we saw a world champion boxer quit in a title match, we would question his heart. Why? Most of us would crap our pants walking to the ring, let alone fight a world class boxer. So why should we question the guy's heart?

We question it because he belongs to a distinguished peer group of world champs. He's in the same group as world champs before him, and therefore will get compared and judged according to the standards those past champs set. So if someone feels that a certain fighter is not living up to a particular standard that they feel a champion, a contender, or even a journey man should meet, than IMO that person has every right to voice it.

The word Bum is used far to often. How many guys deem a fighter a bum, yet have never fought themselves. Many critics have absolutley no idea of the physical and mental strain of being a boxer. Yet these armchair experts deem themselves qualified enough to disrespect fighters and offer their opinions on what a fighter should have done.

I can condone guys offering opinions and their viewpoint, but I loathe guys who make fun of or disrespect a fighter because he doesn't fall into their mould of perfection.

I was just asking you a simple question....most people seem to think the heavyweight division is crap, and if they are in here saying stuff like "We're too hard on professional fighters" then this sort of is against their stance on the heavyweight division.



....so I was just asking if you were one of those people or not. Not trying to make a big deal out of it, I just wanted to get some understanding as to your thought process.
