No .I would not think Mayorga is a good fight with Pavlik since it would be over inside of two rounds. Ricardo is entertaining and I would love to see the drama. And for Lacy . Yes Calzaghe was probably scared. Everyone gets that way. He fought him at home. Look at home advantages in this nba post season. Home teams are like 30-8. Home field is huge. I would not want to see Pavlik fight Abraham at Germany. Those judges are untrustrable. Miranda was robbed and clearly beat the shit out of Arthur.
Some of you will have to help me with something. I would love to see a Pavlik/Calzaghe fight personally, and hope it comes off somewhere down the line; and also would like to see him fight Jones; as I think Jones still has one last good fight in him. Problem is I am not understanding where the legacy cementing factor comes into play fighting either of them.
I like Calzaghe, and am not going to bash his resume, but I just don't see why he would want to go out in his career fighting a guy that we all know is WAY past his prime. It seems to me he will take alot of criticism fighting RJJ; win or lose. If he wins he won't get any credit from alot of people; and if he loses it will put a big ? next to his whole career. Peopke will say if he couldn't beat an old has been in Jones than what does that say about everything else he's done? I'm not saying I'm one of those people, but we all know a majority of the boxing world will talk bad about him.
Now as far as Pavlik, I really don't see where that would add to Joe's legacy either. I would think he will get criticism for fighting a guy who has never even fought out of MW{well except for a fight with Taylor at 166} Joe just got through having a hard time with Hopkins at LHW and it would seem to me if he wanted to go out with a bang he would fight someone like Dawson instead of someone{possibly} like Pavlik who has never really tested the waters at SMW or LHW for that matter. Again, a win wouldn't do all that for him; and a loss would make him look bad against a guy who fought for the 1st time at a higher weight class.
What I'm trying to get at is that I don't see where fighting either will finish his career and garner him accolades from the majority of people. I know he has already "dismissed" Pavlik as a possible fight; but we've all seen where one day a fighter says he'll never fight so and so and the next minute the fight is set; so I don't necessarily think it's a foregone conclusion that Calzaghe will never entertain a fight with Kelly. If it's about getting a big last payday, then I can see fighting Jones. But I wonder if Joe will feel comfortable knowing he went out, granted, fighting a legend, but who is a shell of what he was.
Sorry for the rambling post; just not understanding why anybody would think Pavlik or Jones is a great last hoorah for Calzaghe when there are others out there to end his career on and get the respect I would imagine he wants.
This is a good post, there are question marks about both guys, IMO especially with Jones but it applies to both.
The only thing is who else is there? There are some young guys at super middle but if Pavlik's not proven enough obviously they aren't. I'd like anybody to beat up Froch (unless Tam really is Froch, he seems nice enough) but that doesn't seem likely. Glen Johnson would be too tough of a fight for too little reward. Chad Dawson maybe but is that a bigger fight than Pavlik or is he a more proven fighter than Pavlik?
