so by your theory Pavlik would be a coward if he fought Mayorga because Mayorga's also lost 3 of his last 6?
Also how scared was Joe when he saw Reid torn apart by Lacy?
Pavlik does not make excusses or fake injuries to get out of fights.

fake injuries ha ha, your not answering my questions. all your doing is hating on Calzaghe, everyone knows he struggles with his hands hence why he doesn't have the power he used to. When has he ever faked injury? Fact is Lacy was built up to be the next Mike Tyson, more hyped than Pavlik to be the next big thing, if Calzaghe was a coward like your calling him he would never have took the fight. people like bashing Calzaghe, like previous people have said, if he does beat Pavlik there'll be someone else lined up that he's ducking, Froch, Inkin, Taylor who knows?

The thing is Pavlik is in his prime and not injured, Calzaghe considers fighting old men like Hopkins and Jones a more rewarding finacially and less dangerous strategy.
He fought an injured Kessler and won, good for him, let's see him in a rematch then! Calzaghe will stay well clear of Pavlik and take the easy money in a fight with a well past his best Roy Jones Jr. ( Joe might get a surprise yet by fighting Jones jr.)
Are you implying that Calzaghe only took the Kessler fight because he KNEW he'd get injured? How about Kessler get a time machine and fight a Calzaghe with two good hands.

Pavlik's a tougher fight than Jones, I'd like to see it, but it's a risk reward thing. If Calzaghe beat Pavlik, Kelly's rep would be downgraded immediately, just like Lacy. The haters will give no prop for Calzaghe beating Jones, yet they'd love to use a Pavlik victory over Joe to dismiss Calzaghe's record despite the age difference between Kelly and Joe being far larger then Joe and Roy. While the haters will dismiss Joe's win over Roy, they'd happily big up a win for Pavlik over 37 yr old Joe as a 'prime' Joe.

Bilkbo's right, peiople actually credit Lewis with a win over Tyson, despite him proviung without a doubt he was shot to bits a year later. I'd personally rate a win over Pavlik better than Jones, but there will always be an undefeated 'demon' gunning for the top guy (wether their reputations are misguided or not), Lacy and Kessler were considered as big or bigger threats at the time (consensus being that Joe would actually be slight favourite against Kelly), if Joe fought all of them he would eventually lose due to his advancing years, it's just a stupid risk since a loss WOULD be a damaging shot to his legacy.

I'd like to see Kessler Pavlik on the same bill as Calzaghe Jones. If Pavlik got past Kessler then meet Calzaghe for his career finale, if Pavlik loses to Kessler, Calzaghe could retire honestly saying that there is nobody left for him to beat.

The Kessler rumours about him having a bad hand were just a smoke screen, there was nothing wrong with the guy. Which if you watch the fight is plainly obvious as he landed some very heavy shots with both hands.

As for Pavlik he is a Middleweight - 2 divisions below Joe Calzaghe so its upto him to step up and I think Bob Arum would rather him milk the Middleweight title by beating Rubio, Duddy, Trinidad and Mayorga.

How about once Edison Miranda chins Arthur Abraham that Pavlik gives him a rematch (as Miranda was clearly weight drained last time).
If Miranda loses to Abraham then Pavlik has no excuses not to face 'King' Arthur.

How can you people possibly be a fan for this coward. He hid in wales for years. He never called out Toney , Jones or Hopkins 10 years ago. He hid fighting bums sometimes twice. Lacy fought to a decision with Manfredo.ThAts it. One American primed fighter in a entire career. Now that guy is a bum. Calzaghe lost to Hopkins in that split. He got knocked on his ass in the first and hurt many other times in that fight. Even at Calzaghe's prime he did not posses the power to hurt Hopkins. Hopkins has one of the greatest chins of all time. If he wanted Jones he should have grownthe gonands and fought him 10 years ago. Ducking and running like a girl from Pavlik does not etch your shady record in the hall of fame like it did Sugar Ray Robinson, Marvin Hagler and Harry Greb who fought every one. Greb fought a guy who was 35 pounds over him and beat him. That guys name was Gene Tunney. Now that is a fighter. Calfage grow some. Fight the guy. Give the kid a chance to hold three belts in difrent wieghts ince Armstrong. We know you punch like a pussy but you dont have to run and hide like one.

Those are all better names than most of Calzaghe's defenses.

No .I would not think Mayorga is a good fight with Pavlik since it would be over inside of two rounds. Ricardo is entertaining and I would love to see the drama. And for Lacy . Yes Calzaghe was probably scared. Everyone gets that way. He fought him at home. Look at home advantages in this nba post season. Home teams are like 30-8. Home field is huge. I would not want to see Pavlik fight Abraham at Germany. Those judges are untrustrable. Miranda was robbed and clearly beat the shit out of Arthur.

He called out Hopkin's years ago but when the fight was arranged Hopkins backed out, as for hiding in Wales, he's also fought in Scotland, England, Germany, Denmark and now he's gone to the States. Unlike Jones who never left his comfort zones, Hopkins fought out of his comfort zone in Ecuador and only managed a draw because his one of the greatest chins of all time let him down Im not knocking these guys but your saying Calzaghe should have been calling them out, why weren't they calling him out? its cool for them to stay at home but Calzaghe's a coward for doing it

Some of you will have to help me with something. I would love to see a Pavlik/Calzaghe fight personally, and hope it comes off somewhere down the line; and also would like to see him fight Jones; as I think Jones still has one last good fight in him. Problem is I am not understanding where the legacy cementing factor comes into play fighting either of them.

I like Calzaghe, and am not going to bash his resume, but I just don't see why he would want to go out in his career fighting a guy that we all know is WAY past his prime. It seems to me he will take alot of criticism fighting RJJ; win or lose. If he wins he won't get any credit from alot of people; and if he loses it will put a big ? next to his whole career. Peopke will say if he couldn't beat an old has been in Jones than what does that say about everything else he's done? I'm not saying I'm one of those people, but we all know a majority of the boxing world will talk bad about him.

Now as far as Pavlik, I really don't see where that would add to Joe's legacy either. I would think he will get criticism for fighting a guy who has never even fought out of MW{well except for a fight with Taylor at 166} Joe just got through having a hard time with Hopkins at LHW and it would seem to me if he wanted to go out with a bang he would fight someone like Dawson instead of someone{possibly} like Pavlik who has never really tested the waters at SMW or LHW for that matter. Again, a win wouldn't do all that for him; and a loss would make him look bad against a guy who fought for the 1st time at a higher weight class.

What I'm trying to get at is that I don't see where fighting either will finish his career and garner him accolades from the majority of people. I know he has already "dismissed" Pavlik as a possible fight; but we've all seen where one day a fighter says he'll never fight so and so and the next minute the fight is set; so I don't necessarily think it's a foregone conclusion that Calzaghe will never entertain a fight with Kelly. If it's about getting a big last payday, then I can see fighting Jones. But I wonder if Joe will feel comfortable knowing he went out, granted, fighting a legend, but who is a shell of what he was.

Sorry for the rambling post; just not understanding why anybody would think Pavlik or Jones is a great last hoorah for Calzaghe when there are others out there to end his career on and get the respect I would imagine he wants.

This is a good post, there are question marks about both guys, IMO especially with Jones but it applies to both.

The only thing is who else is there? There are some young guys at super middle but if Pavlik's not proven enough obviously they aren't. I'd like anybody to beat up Froch (unless Tam really is Froch, he seems nice enough) but that doesn't seem likely. Glen Johnson would be too tough of a fight for too little reward. Chad Dawson maybe but is that a bigger fight than Pavlik or is he a more proven fighter than Pavlik?

Well said. Hopkins turned down a fight with Calzaghe years ago - so it wasn't Joe that was hiding but the so called 'Executioner'.

Also Calzaghe was the champion in the weight above Hopkins so its down to these guys to step upto him but most just bypassed him and pretended he wasn't there which was helpful cos most US fans don't look out side there own backyard and just swallow the HBO hype machine.
