Okey dokey...here goes.
For the better years of my die hard arm chair devotion to the sport I have followed & admired Roy Jones jr & Joe Calzaghe. I salivated at the possibilities of a Calzaghe Jones bout or Calzaghe Hopkins.
I got one of those...& I have a feeling that I'll be gettin the other one just around the corner.
While I have no complaints with that...I can honestly say that I do not want to see Pavlik face Calzaghe. Joe, IWHO, would make Kelly look a bit foolish. I like Pavlik...always have & always will...but Joe's the superior boxer here. He proved that against Kessler, Lacy, & Hopkins of late & he's been proving it for the better part of the past decade.
It's easy for everyone to hate on Joe because most have been discounting him for years & years & years...& now that Joe's finally come stateside...well...many of my fellow Yanks have had to eat their words.
Oh well.
Roy has had a career resurgence...no if's, ands, or buts about it. He came back from two devastating losses...knockout losses...& in the end...if you want to bitch & piss & moan about Joe & his choice of opponents...you should turn the cheek.
Roy's a lot more reputable opponent than Lockett...no matter what anyone says.
If Kelly Pavlik can have a pass over...why can't Joe?
Seriously.
That being said...Roy's no pass over & the fight might surprise some of you. I don't expect Roy to just lay down for Joe. Roy could shock the world...& there aint shit wrong with that.
As I said...a lot of this has to do with some ridiculous critique of Calzaghe. It just get's tiring.
Calzaghe beat Lacy, Kessler, & Hopkins.
Pavlik beat Taylor twice, Miranda, & Lockett.
Apples to apples...well...you keep spoon feeding yourselves all this biased bullshit you'll start tasting sour grapes.
Joe Calzaghe has earned his rights to be respected & he's paid his dues. Pavlik still has some ways to go. Again, I love Pavlik...but I have to agree with one thing that Enzo said...he's still got work to do.
Never beg a 40 dollar hooker...specially after she's just turned down your mom's credit card!!
What I cant understand is, at what point did fatha and son Calzaghe decide Pavlik wasnt deserving of a fight?
Joe certainly thought Pavlik was the ideal fight at one time because he publicly stated he wanted to fight Pavlik once he beat Hopkins.
I felt a whole lot happier when i realised that once Joe has retired we wont have to hear from Enzo again. Mainly cos all his other fighters suck.
You're spot on about the unnecasary critique of Joe, he fights Hopkins and chases Roy (granted past their primes) yet Kelly fights Lockett and lines up a contender fighter (who should be 1-1 with another certain contender fighter that Joe was rightly ridiculed for taking on) yet Joe gets the shit.
I don't share your confidence of how the fight will go though, Joe has been diminishing ever so slightly every fight for a few years now, and it really showed against Hopkins, the speed has diminshed, let alone the long lost pop in his punches. He finds it tough against Pavlik IMO, a fight he would have got a comfortable decision in a couple years back.
Calzaghe's already proved himself, despit what you guys think, if he beats Pavlik it will NEVER shut up the doubters, well if they haven't been shut up already he could KO king kong and there will always be ifs and buts.
I think Pavlik's a great fighter, but there are enough ?? over his opponents so far for his record to be downgraded retrospectively. His win over Miranda already doesn't look so shit hot now that another guy did it quicker without taking a single head shot in return, and people were already on Taylor's back before Kelly got to him.
There are multiple quotes from Joe for the past year saying he would rather fight Pavlik than Jones. He was saying all along how a Pavlik fight would be a huge fight. He even said he would move down to 168 to do it.
I think his struggle with B-Hop and Kelly's absolute destruction of his stablemate, changed his mind. He knows Pavlik is on the rise still and very hungry. Pavlik simply chops guys down and cannot be discouraged in the ring. That is not a good scenario for a guy on 36 year old legs.
So many claim Pavlik is "One Dimensional". I personally see much much more than that. Nothing fancy, but brutally effective.
Move to about 6 and a half minutes into this interview.
