It's different at my gym. They advocate the fighters to stand more side-on like what you've been experimenting with. On the contrary of what your trainer said, I find that I have a lot more power in my cross when I narrow my stance.

If you hear a voice within you saying that I am not a painter, then by all means paint and that voice will be silenced.

In martial arts a straight line stance is called a cat stance, and as long as you sort your hips out, its the most punishing stance to deliver punches from

thanks for the good advice guys, my coach reckons cos i am short and a southpaw that the regular stance is better but im def getting better results from side on and not eating as much punches so i will keep working on it and try and get the best overall way .

I started out in a Tyson like stance, because I watched too much Tyson fights. Through the years I switched more and more to a side on stance. It puts the shoulder in line to help with defense, and frees the front (left in my case) arm for offensive purposes.
