You should watch more of his fights and then make up your mind. He had the quick powerful combinations that had dismantled some of his opponents in beautiful fashion. He also fought tough and strong fighters, consider Machen, Ingomar, Bonevena, Chuvalo, no push overs. He paid his dues. I think he was legitamate champion, and not a terrible one in the least.

Now take some guys like Shannon Briggs, Saltan, and a lot of the guys mentioned who's been spinning the alphabet roulette wheel and you have just another fighter with a belt.
Pattersons opponants were all hand picked his trainer manager cus d amato picked all his opponants and and he beat them all fair enough but then came a real fighter Liston he fought him twice and was knocked out in the first round both times the reason for this is liston was the first man who was not carefully selected for patterson and d amto tried to talk patterson out of fighting him which is the reason they fell out

Eddie Machen lost to every reallt good fighter he faced Fraiser Liston so i dont rate him
George Chuvalo lost almost 20 fights and built up his record on a diet of easy victims so i dont rate him
Oscar Natalio beat a load of no bodys and lost to any good fighters he fought Ali Fraiser
Ingemar Johanasson was a decent fighter and Pattersons best win in my opinion but this win does not make a great champion

Personally i dont consider people who hold silly belts champs so thats why i did not list off all the people who hold such belts
Patterson held a real championship i dont think he was good enough to hold i think great managment and a poor level of opposition at the time made him the champ not his skill which was average at best
