the state now has Soviet-level powers to spy on its own population and a whole bunch of other stuff. I wonder how things got like that.

and to imprison people without trial for years, to enter people's homes without justifiable cause, to spy on emails and mobile phone conversations, to demand DNA information .........

But it's because we are fighting for freedom, of course.
