Look at his amatuer background one of the top amatuer fighter's took out the undefeated Cuban. I get sick of this shit on Cooney he went 55-3 in the amatuers and was beaten by the alltime greatest fighter's of all time. Do I need to name them ? Holmes,Foreman,Spinks. Nothing to be ashamed of at all in my book. Gave Holmes a helluva a tough time for the heavyweight crown. If weren't for Holmes saying " if Cooney wasn't white he wouldn't be worth a shit" every 5 mins I think we would look at him a little differently. He did what he had to do and did it by knocking the top ranked oppents out not by desicion.
Who I think is the biggest hype job ever is Tyson pure and simple. He was amazing when he was young but since his return after his imprisonment was even bigger than he originally was and did nothing great whatsoever.
Holmes- Cooney was 26 years ago. Do you even remember they hype they gave this guy?
I'm old enought to remember all the hype. He did get plenty of it, but he was a good fighter who had some accomplishments under his belt, not just at the amateur, but also at the pro level. The fact is the fight with Holmes with overhyped and because of the racial tension mixed into the thing, it makes him seem like a big white hype job. That fact is, had Cooney been black, with his accomplishments, they would have still been talking about Cooney as a credible and dangerous opponent. Cooney had the most feared left hook in the division at the time and it was with good reason. He had sparked, Young, Lyle, and Norton in order, in a grand total of 6 rounds. The division was somewhat thin at the time, and Cooney was one of the better opponents Holmes fought.
Cooney made a fairly close fight of it. Without those points for low blows, he was even or close too it on the cards. If Holmes has taken out Cooney in 5-6 rounds or Cooney had never been in the fight, you could call Cooney the greatest hype job, but to call him that is an insult to a good fighter who was taken advantage of by gready management.
