A couple pieces of tape can help. With me it's gotten to the point where I don't need to use tape. I just secure the wraps against my leg, a table or the ring and make the folds, then once around the top of the palm, and then in between the fingers.

I bet gauze can be nice, especially if you have a trainer that can show how to do it right. It'd be enough to make you feel like a pro.
