Generally I like showboaters. If you can showboat and get away with it, that is one of the purest gestures of complete control in a fight.

Is it good sportsmanship? No, but the essence of boxing is to build yourself up at the expense of others. Its every man for himself. Many had to be broken down in order for guys like Pacquaio to build himself up.

Calzaghe's fighting style is ugly as hell by itself, combine that with his cringeworthy showboating, you got ppl hating everywhere.

Normaly I like showboating somtimes funny(Ali) or part of a tactic (Leonard) but Jones against Lacy was cruel mainly in the 2nd half of the fight when it was clear that Lacy had nothing to offer.

That jumping up and down crap in the 10th? round totaly took the piss IMO.

When Jones KOed that bloke after having his hands behind his back was amazing skill.

Taking the piss out of a beaten fighter proves nothing.

You never heard any Roy Jones fans complain about his showboating throughout his career but as soon as it was on the other boot eg Calzaghe doibg it to Roy they moaned about it!

Jones latest win shows he isnt totaly shot he can still beat 2nd tier fitghters with ease

    ...
That's pretty much the time when you could count on Roy to really crank it up.

I'd like to see Jones try that against Dawson, Hopkins, Johnson or even Tavoris Cloud. Both of them doing it was embarassing, because it was not a case of showboating to show their talent, more to show the opponent's weakness. This was not showboating for the sake of showing their skill, it was doing it because they knew their opponent was beaten.
Bingo. Both were way over the top.Especially when you see a guy talking to the crowd, commentators.Hate that with a passion.
I actually thought it was great when Jones in his prime & Mayweather were doing that, absolutely loved it, or when Roy would turn his back on opponents. However, they were doing it not because their opponent was weak (Jesus Chavez gave Mayweather the 2nd toughest fight of his career IMO) but because they were that good. They didn't do it because they were facing a shell, which I felt was what Calzaghe & Jones did. I didn't mind Calzaghe doing it against Lacy, because it was demonstrating just how good he was. Same with Hopkins/Pavlik, Leonard vs Duran/Hagler. But Jones & Calzaghe were doing it because they could get away with it, neither now would have risked that against an elite LHW.
    x2, I'd rep you but I can't.

...i actually don't have a problem with it, all part of the game. Would i do it ? Probably not, but no one picked lacy off the street and told him to fight. You have the possibility of winning or being made a fool of you never know. The best way to keep a guy from showboating, or heck even from doing touchdown dances in football for that matter is to not let them score in the first place. Lacy had no problem sucking up the glory from winning and put himself in the situation in the first place. He took a chance taking a fight when he really should have had his ass at home withthe rest of us. He shouldn't be taking any more fights really. Because you put up such little resistance that a guy can build a toolshed and beat you at the same time is no fault of jones..to taunt is his style he continues to do it and his fans keep cheering so ..... look they both got paid, don't feel to sorry for either. As a side note i don't really like jones so a lot of things he does bugs me but hey, the goal is to win the fight not to end up with a bunch of friends at the end of your career. And that he did so congrats either way.

Jones looked very good and sharp in the fight but it just goes to show how good Calzaghe is/was to beat Jones with ease when they fought.
Personally I think it was more the fact how shite and shot mentally Lacy is, Calzaghe was past his best against RJJ, and RJJ was past his best. I still think RJJ would put a beatdown on Calzaghe prime for prime.
Too bad Roy admitted he ducked Calzaghe by stating...

"I had too much to lose at the time"............

Roy taunted many opponents over the years and showed little sportsmanship to guys he beat......He got what he gave

I didn't like Roy when he was in his prime. Something about him rubbed me the wrong way. When I saw him get sparked by Tarver, my hate for him left. I actually felt bad for him when Johnson took him out.

Then Calzaghe comes along and acts like a jerk to Jones while he was dominating him. I grew sorry for Jones there and liked Calzaghe less.

Now I saw Jones showboating against Lacy and felt all those old feelings I felt when
I watched him in his prime. I'm glad Calzaghe did what he did. Jones deserved it...

Also on another note, I don't think I've ever heard such a blatantly biased commentary job as on that broadcast. When the co-commentator suggested that Jones would have to move up to fight Danny Green (of course the best CW out there ) because there were no defining fights or credible opponents at LHW (Hopkins, Dawson, Johnson II) I had to laugh. Although not quite as much as when he appeared to suggest that he only lost to Joe Calzaghe because of the cut. Also the suggestion at how he could have possibly lost to Antonio Tarver, ermmm, because Tarver was actually pretty damn good.

I thought it was funny when one of the commentators during the fight said something along the lines of, "I kinda want Jones to get caught with a big left hook just so he can take this fight seriously."

I was thinking the exact same thing...

I thought it left a bad taste in the mouth. I find it demeaning to someone who basically every time he steps in the ring puts his life at risk. Jones looked good against a very limited fighter. Just would have had a bit more respect for his performance if he hadn`t pulled that shit so much. Now like you porky wish JC had made him look like more of a knob than what he already did!

What makes me laugh is people on here complaining about JC showboating against the very man who made a career out of making inferior athletes look ridiculous.

I personally dont care for that kind of thing in this sport. The men competing at that level inparticular are either on their way up or on their way down and its entirely unneccessary to be mocking someone you know youve got the better of physically.

I think its very easy for us in our armchairs to decide a fighter is past it or shot but its another thing entirely to have to be the boxer who faces them in the ring.

I'm sure facing the great Roy Jones was a massive massive mental challenge to Joe Calzaghe, and he took the fight and Roy's threat very seriously indeed. The same with Jones against Lacy. Jones was coming off a series of losses, including his most recent to Calzaghe and he knew he had to win against Lacy.

It's easy for us to see Lacy as shot and posing no threat but we arn't going to be getting into the ring with him. I'm sure Jones was fired up for that fight, knowing he had to win and look good, and I'm sure he took the fight very seriously indeed, certainly not regarding it as a walk in the park.

In both cases the showboating was done imo when they realised they had got on top and were winning the fights, and it was the satisfaction and warrior mentality in them both that led to that showboating. They wern't taunting their opponents for being shot, rather they recognised the challenge they posed far more than we did, and were showboating because they were happy and cocky in the moment realising they had overcome them.

I'm 100% sure that both Joe and Roy give far more actual respect to the threat's posed by Jones and Lacy respectively than we the fans do who can just write an opponent off with a 'he' shot its a gimme fight'.

Neither Roy or Joe will regard their opponents as just shells of their former selves and will have taken the fight risks very seriously indeed.

In a way it's us the fans who are cocky and write fighters off as shot and finished..........

It was one thing for Roy to taunt his opponents when he was P4P king, but for him to do it now, at a point where he is a shell of himself against second tier opposition is laughable......

I would agree, that Roy got a taste of his own medicine in the Joe fight. I am not a huge fan of taunting to begin with, but when you are not top p4p it is especially annoying.....
