The amount of shows I have seen dedicated to providing "evidence" of some impending doom in 2012 is ridiculous. They frequently appear on The History Channel and The Discovery Channel etc., it's nothing but a fad. People are always going to have an endless appetite for these kinds of things, it's only natural, and there's always going to be some other people rubbing their hands together ready to cash in on it.
Anyone else remember when y2k was going to spell doom for all humanity (that's obviously a bit hyperbolic)? Hell, before the first Gulf War I remember seeing all these Christian books pop up telling everyone that Saddam Hussein was the Anti-Christ etc.![]()

If there's hysteria happening on anything more than a tiny scale, then it's escaped my attention. The movie is pure escapism, I doubt many people are fooled.
I'll have to look up what the Mayan lore says is gonna happen, after all it's their calendar that is ending I believe.

huh? who's we? who were you talking about? ok, I wasn't referring to the history channel and discovery channel stuff you mentioned. Anyways, yeah they're making money, but I think you're being a little too cynical here. History/Discovery channels are pretty level headed as tv goes. I don't think people are being exploited, they have an interest in the subject, and so people make shows about it, even if it is bullshit or speculation. I 'd say the number of people who really buy into the doom and prophesy thing is not sufficient to justify these shows. It's just interesting, or maybe just entertainment.

Tend to go year by year personally.

Im reasonably sure that the Mayans meant change.
That the world will not ever be ran the same starting from that date.
Or this way will have ran its course by then,
something like that.
