The amount of shows I have seen dedicated to providing "evidence" of some impending doom in 2012 is ridiculous. They frequently appear on The History Channel and The Discovery Channel etc., it's nothing but a fad. People are always going to have an endless appetite for these kinds of things, it's only natural, and there's always going to be some other people rubbing their hands together ready to cash in on it.

Anyone else remember when y2k was going to spell doom for all humanity (that's obviously a bit hyperbolic)? Hell, before the first Gulf War I remember seeing all these Christian books pop up telling everyone that Saddam Hussein was the Anti-Christ etc.
