For you Mayweather fans, that's all this "hate" boils down to...the average boxing fan just wants to see the best fighter out there pushed to be great....he obviously hasn't done it for himself so if we don't pat him on the back for the JMM fight then maybe he'll eventually fight someone dangerous or someone who's size and power puts him at a disadvantage
And if he's never tested?
What if Mayweather is just way better than everyone else?
I mean, he took almost 2 years off, came back and made the #2 guy look like a complete amateur. I understand weight difference, but to totally outclass a world ranked champion like that? In such a devastating fashion? Just about pitching a complete shut out across the scorecards?
I'm sorry, but that isn't only weight/height/reach difference. That is pure raw skill displayed at it's finest.
And i'm inclined to believe that he can do that against just about anyone.
There is nobody i see in boxing today (that could potentially have a match with Mayweather) that could rival his skill. I understand there are guys that are bigger, stronger, closer to his size. But there is nobody who is touching his skill. Nobody who shows they have what it takes, in terms of pure skill, to beat him.
Its like this: If Usain Bolt shatters a world record, that nobody else can even come close to, but he did it on a track running by himself, I don't need to see him race 1-on-1 against every other runner to know that he is the fastest man alive.
If Mayweather is "just better than everyone else" then he's going to have to figure out something special to do. He's NEVER unified a division, how about he do that?
If Wladimir Klitschko fought Bernard Hopkins I doubt we'd see much of a fair fight but that's essentially what Floyd's last fight was.
Sure Floyd has plenty of skill, but let's put it this way, if I was a track fan and I got to watch Usain Bolt, I don't want to watch him JOG because he's racing guys that were drug out of a bar or guys who are college track stars, I want to see him set a World Record vs Tyson Gay and whoever the hell else is a top sprinter.
This isn't a one time only deal in the history of boxing, guys sometimes have to do crazy stuff to catch the attention of the fans...what if Floyd fought Kelly Pavlik?? I would sure as hell give him credit for that!!! Why because it's a DANGEROUS FIGHT and Floyd is at a height, reach, weight disadvantage and he would be forced to use his skill and we would see what he truly has.
I give him credit for what he did below 140 check out any Floyd thread I posted in regarding this. You say he is an all time great at super feather.....what about the rest of the divisions he has fought in? You can't just say "He is an ATG at SFW" how does that work?
he isn't one of the greats at WW, that's for sure. neither was Duran who cemented his legacy at 135.
there's a clear difference between the safety-first PBF of the recent years to the slick boxer-puncher PBF at 130 and 135. and in resume. he cemented his legacy at 130 by cleaning out the division and handing out top-class performances consistently.
Cotto doesn't act like a DICK and will try and make the weight less of an issue by coming in within the allowable range, none of the fuck it attitude of PBF, here's the money I will weigh what i like.
I'm just going to answer the double standard question.
Floyd fought someone whose last fight was at 135.
Cotto is about to fight someone whose last two fights were at 140 and 147. Not only this but he will fight Pac at a catchweight. He will get criticized if he comes overweight, but that's still waiting to happen. Floyd on the other hand, came two pounds over the contracted limit against someone who is fighting two classes heavier than his highest weight.
Plus, like many others have said, Pacquiao's speed and power are still there so it's a much more credible fight.
