ricardo lopez was great while orlando canizales was just a notch below. but both made many successful title defenses. finito had a total of 22 while canizales had 16 which in any era is very impressive. both were great, great technicians but i have to say i think lopez was just a little better.
both great fighters, Canizales was a bit sharper and a bit more polished but IMO Lopez packed a bit more power, which is what i felt helped him move up in weight, my pick is Lopez
i've always wondered how a Calderon/Lopez fight would be at 108

Two of the more consummate professionals you will ever find, two pleasures to watch and under stated Champions in a very long time.
Hate to pick but would def have to go with Lopez. He had the extra something special in combination punching, finishing crisp and sharply. Not to mention consistency being in Lopezs favor.Canizales was a stellar champion,a workmans workman but unlike Lopez had been involved is a couple of very debatable descisions....the first Hardy fight and his record breaking 16th defense with 10 fight upstart Sergio Reyes.Reyes fought with little respect and tons of abandon, after getting clipped and dropped with a right hand he rebounded and hung with the long time Champion on more than equal footing, staying in his chest mostly.Helluva fight, but had Reyes taking that one.
Orlando may have tipped the scales in regards to level of competition..the weight struggles dictated it and he benefited from high network visibility since early on.Both Lopez and Canizales were a bit deprived of that much sought after "super fight" with fellow stars. He got Junior Jones when both were off there rises and that fight would have been a dream fight at Bantamweight years earlier....unlike Orlando, Lopez resisted the urge and fans pleads to climb a weight class and biggest foe was Rosendo Alvarez who gave him his toughest fight.....likewise a matchmakers dream would have been a mega showdown between Lopez and Michael Carbajal , Gonzalez or even a Yuri Arbachakov.Call em two of the best in last few decades.Though Canizales had more exposure and was a very fine fighter,Lopez will and should go down as an all time great.

Lopez. He's clearly top 20 all time. Canizales is not
Ricardo Lopez, he's one of the most complete fighters in history for me. Canizales was an excellent fighter, possibly as someone said that bit more athletic, but for me Lopez was just that bit better overall. No real difference in their level of competition.
