Bernard technically was the linear champ at light heavyweight. He beat Antonio Tarver to claim the undisputed title and was the Ring champ. Since then he lost to Calzaghe in a close fight but Calzaghe has now retired. Also there was no belt on the line against Calzaghe as it was fought at 170 so Hopkins is basically still the linear champ.

You will see that the Ring now have the 175 title as vacant and it will remain as long as B Hop keeps fighting and avoiding Chad Dawson.

Dawson wants to be recognised as the the undisputed champ at 175 and the only way he can lay claim to that is by beating Hopkins.

For Dawsons status as number, for his legacy in beating the old champion and for the universal respect of fight fans he needs to beat Bernard Hopkins.

Wins over the likes of Tarver, Johnson and maybe Pascal or Diaconu won't make him number one the way a win over B Hop will.

Clearly Dawson wants B Hop, its by far the most significant fight out there for him, and he wants to say he beat the champ to become the champ.
The lightheavy title was on the line (it wasn't at 170). Calzaghe then defended it against Roy.

It's vacant cause he retired.
I don't know, according to boxrec Calzaghe Hopkins wasn't a title fight.
Well boxrec are wrong then.
