Win win fight for Hatton too. He either goes out with a great win the whole of Britain would remember or he loses a changing of the guard fight and can obviously blame age.

As ive clearly pointed out year after year..

    calzaghe-woods
    calzaghe-froch
    hatton-witter

All at one time or another would of been huge domestic fights. But what exactly is the incentive for ricky hatton to fight a huge DOMESTIC star for 2-3million in the UK when he could be going over to america and earning double that to fight a guy he can beat with his hands tied behind his back
err.. what? Khan is a massive star in Britain, sells 10,000 tickets fighting guys no-one has ever heard of and is a PPV fighter. A fight with Hatton would sell out a stadium easily. The PPV would be massive.

    Woods = nobody.
Froch = No TV deal and sells 6,000 tickets in Nottingham.

Neither were ever serious rivals or a big fight for Calzaghe.

Witter? Hatton was only in mega fights in the States against BIG names. The Powderpuff, Urango and Collazo fights weren't big events at all.

HBO refused to buy the Lazcano fight yet Hatton still fought in England because he's big enough a star to sell 55,000 tickets fighting a washed up nobody. Hatton could have (should have) fought Witter anytime he wanted. And Hatton is finished as an American attraction.

Hatton didnt see a fight with witter who was an established world champion as sellable even before he got in with the likes of castillo and mayweather

Now he has been in with that level of opponent you honestly think at this stage in his career he`ll jump at the chance to fight a domestic showdown despite the fact he`s now a good 10-20 million quid richer??

Yeah right Hatton's main excuse (one of a billion) was not giving Witter a payday.

Do you not understand Hatton sells out any fight in Britain regardless of the opponent? Do you not understand Khan's a star in Britain? That domestic showdown is the biggest fight for Hatton by miles.

Read this about Hatton's stateside appeal - Following recent claims from Ricky that he is the draw in the Mayweather fight, Ellerbe was quick to point out the facts: "The British fans have had unlimited access to all three of his previous fights here in the US and not one has come close to selling out. The facts are he did about 4200 paid attendance in a 18,000 seat arena in the Collazo fight that grossed $500k, he fought in the Paris ballroom against Urango and had a 5200 paid attendance that grossed $1.2m, and then he did 9800 paid at the Thomas and Mack arena with Castillo, the same arena Floyd did 15,000 with Judah coming off a loss. I guess since none of these fights soldout, then it must of been imposter instead of Ricky Hatton".

As Ellerbe mentioned Floyd's previous fight with Judah, Mayweather's purse against Baldomir was $8m, Hatton made an estimated £500,000 against Castillo - just over $1m.

Maybe the fact we have to travel thousands of miles for the privilage

No the american interest for ricky isnt what it is for mayweather and a lot of other US boxers. But the fact he can still fill a large stadium in a whole different nation shows there is interest

    The facts say he can't.

The point is - Hatton is a tremendous selling boxing star, but nowhere near the size in America you make out, he couldn't earn 6 million fighting nobodies before and certainly can't now

Rick didnt give Witter a payday because he simply didnt wish to line his pockets, it's that simple. Rick told me the reason he didnt like Witter was because he was extremely two-faced and a prick. He came to that conclusion because of the fact Witter always saw to seek out Rick at various boxing functions and was the nicest person in the world to his face, then as soon as Rick wasnt there, and the camera's were on, Witter completely changed his tune and began calling out Rick.

Also, after Witter ran the marathon against Judah, Showtime simply would not entertain a fight with Hatton. And as Showtime were the paymasters at that particular time, it was never going to happen.

I think there was a window in which they could have made a decent domestic match up. I know for a fact that when Ricky resigned with Sports Network he demanded that the Witter fight was in the contract should he wish to exercise the option. After all the shit that Witter spouted from then on in, he didnt bother. But it certainly was his intent.

Any accusations that Hatton was scared of Witter is a joke, Ricky would fight anyone, thats already been proved. Warren held Hatton back for many years whilst he padded his record, and although I understand the reason behind this, in hindsight, I think it was to Rick's detriment.

    A funny story about Witter.......

Witter had just had a new set of Wrought Iron gates built outside his home and was extremely proud of them, to the point he was seen posing outside his new gates in the local paper with a huge smile on his face. Now lets just say some words were passed between certain people, and the very next day those sparkling new gates were stolen and dumped. Witter's face in his local rag the following day, stood outside his house with the gates now missing was a sight for sore eyes. I know Rick still laughs to this day when it gets mentioned. Not that he had anything to do with it by the way.

As for Mayweather selling out the Hatton fight, thats ridiculous in my opinion. Mayweather needed Oscar and Ricky to do those numbers. He has never done anything like that before off his own bat, and the reason why is he's just not that popular. He's a genius, but he alone doesnt put bums on seats.

Some people say boxing is a matter of life or death, it's not, it's far more important than that.

Mayweather just did a million PPVs with Marquez. He did 850,000 in the States with Hatton, no?

The fact Hatton-Witter goes back to before they were even world-class is why it's such a shame it never happened. AS Ricky was the one in control obviously he gets the flack for it not happening.

Only Tsyzu, Castillo, Floyd and Pac are justifiable better fights for Hatton than Witter. As I said, if he can sell 55,000 for Lazcano he's got no excuse to not fight Witter. So.. in almost 10 years Hatton found 20+ fighters other than Witter to face.

Again your missing the fact hatton even in beating and humiliating witter would still of been giving the very man who showed him so much contempt over the years the payday of his life

And what the hell does junior witter bring to the table that juan lazcano doesnt?

The payday excuse is pathetic. No fight would ever happen if all fighters took that attitude. There's always a bigger draw.

What Witter brings more than Lazcano is a near 10 year Brit rivalry. He was also rated no.2 lightwelter behind Hatton at the time. So Witter-Hatton was between the two best lightwelters in the world.

Do you honestly believe boxing fans would have chosen Lazcano over Witter? Even Hatton lovers like you would prefer Hatton smashing Witter on his record instead of Lazcano, right?

But it certainly wasnt his intent.

Witter had just had a new set of Wrought Iron gates built outside his home and was extremely proud of them, to the point he was seen posing outside in the local paper with huge smile on his face. Now lets just say some words were passed between certain people, and the very next day those sparkling new gates were stolen and dumped. Witter face in his local rag the following day, stood outside his house with the gates now missing was a sight for saw eyes.

He's a genius, but he alone doesnt put bums on seats,
Mayweather just did a million PPVs with Marquez.

Very true but we all know the reasons for this. This fight wouldnt have done a million PPV's two years ago. It was Mayweathers return that drummed up the interest, the saviour of boxing if you like. With the UFC and MMA making a big surge over the last couple of years, this was in a effect the fight that proved boxing isnt dead quite yet as speculated. It did need someone like Mayweather to do this, and his two year lay-off, much like SRL, generated this type of interest. Also the fights with Oscar and Hatton certainly upped Floyds appeal in my opinion.
Some people say boxing is a matter of life or death, it's not, it's far more important than that.

Yeah I agree, without doubt the Oscar/Hatton fights gave him serious star power, that's why you can't say he doesn't put bums on seats anymore. Don't think anyone was expecting a million buys.

Ok, you can see my first point dealing with Witter is basically in response particularly to the first 3 bolded bits. I don't understand this, didn't want to line his pockets stuff. That just seems a really pathetic way to do things. What would you have said if Mayweather or Pacquiao had refused to fight Hatton because they didn't want to give him the payday?

So Witter wasn't a prick to him to his face?? That's a justified reason for avoiding a fight? As for 'not having anything to do' with Witter's gates being stolen. Well, that's a far more prickish thing to do then what Witter did. Having the intent to fight him means nothing, if he willfully chose not to do it. I've always disliked Witter & used to see Hatton's side that there were bigger fights out there, but thanks to all I've just read I now think Hatton is a dick. Cheers for that.

As for your second point about Mayweather, you can argue that about Oscar maybe but not Hatton. Look at it this way, Oscar did 1m more PPVs for his fight with Mayweather than he did for his next highest PPV seller (Trinidad). That would suggest that Mayweather had at least some noticeable effect on drawing fans to the fight. As Fenster points out Hatton may have brought over loads of fans for the Mayweather & Pacquiao fights, but they weren't all flocking over for Malignaggi, Castillo or Urango. Hatton's PPVs in the States were high because of PBF & Pac, not because of him. In both cases, they were the stars not Ricky.

You can also look at reported UK PPV figures. For the Mayweather fight they were 1.4m buys, for Pacquiao 400,000 buys & for Malignaggi 300,000. That surely also suggests that Mayweather was some kind of draw, not that I'm not saying Hatton wasn't responsible for the bulk of those in this country. But Mayweather did 1m PPVs with Marquez, even ignoring that it was his return to boxing, the fact is that plus Pac-Cotto doing 1m+ as well is proof that Hatton was never the draw, certainly not in the US. It was the quality of opponents that drew thousands of fans over, otherwise the MGM would have been packed when he fought Paulie.
